An Easy One-Page Schedule Can Change Your Life!
Does the thought of a schedule put you at ease or make you want to throw in the towel? No matter what, there is one helpful thing that changed my homeschool life for the better. It is a list of the box titles of subjects to complete in order each day. Before I had this, my sons depended on me to tell them what to do… their whole homeschool day.
Limit Their Schedule to One-Page and Keep It Simple
Sometimes less is more. Try to limit each child’s schedule to one page and keep it simple. You can hand-write it or type it, but either way try to use the subject names from the boxes in the Heart of Dakota guide the child is using. Noting the time allotment behind each subject gives kiddos some idea of how long the subject should take.
On my schedule I also included the room of the house I wanted the work to be completed in. You don’t have to do this, but it helped our sons enjoy (and happily share) the most wanted and handy couches, tables, chairs, etc. of the house! Finally, I wrote the start and end times next to each subject.
No Need to Reinvent the Schedule
Often times, the same one-page schedule worked all year! I put each child’s schedule in a plastic page protector, and each day my sons checked off their subjects with a dry erase marker as they finished them. When the day was done, they erased their checkmarks and started fresh the next day.
Keeping the Order of the Subjects Frees Up Time
By keeping the order of the subjects the same, we saved so much time! My children began to expect which subject comes next, and it saved time for me and for them. Of course, we didn’t hit each time exactly every day! However, the actual time on the clock when each subject occurs was less important than the routine.
The consistency comes from the order remaining the same. So, even if the time of the day each kiddo completes those subjects varies, the routine keeps continuity. I want to encourage you to try making a simple, one-page easy-to-follow schedule for your child and see what you think! It could change your life!
