Heart of Dakota - From Our House to Yours - Language Arts Phonics Help for Struggling Readers

Language Arts Phonics Help for Struggling Readers

Do you have a struggling reader? Heart of Dakota has handpicked four amazing “rescue” phonics resources to help struggling readers! Though some of these rescue phonics programs incorporate methods that assist children with dyslexia, they work well for struggling students without dyslexia too. At Heart of Dakota, we love books! We carry these phonics rescue programs to open the door to the exciting world of reading for all children!

For the best results, we recommend daily phonics throughout the homeschool year, as well as a minimum of three days of phonics instruction throughout breaks. The consistency of continuing phonics instruction helps struggling students make progress without backsliding. So when breaks come, enjoy them fully in every other way! But with phonics instruction, keep moving forward at least three days a week! Let’s get started!

Phonics Help for Struggling 6 – 9 Year-Olds

Using a targeted approach to skill development, Learn to Read for Kids with Dyslexia: Volumes 1-2 features more than 100 colorful games and activities in each volume. These work together to strengthen auditory processing skills and support letter formation in writing. Most importantly, they make reading fun! Through rhyming, racing, blending, and tracing, struggling readers will learn to read and enjoy it.

The Learn to Read for Kids with Dyslexia Volume 1 workbook includes these important tools:

  • Daily practice! This standout among dyslexia books gives kids opportunities to practice their reading skills with exercises focused on phonemic awareness, dysgraphia, and auditory processing disorder.
  • Playful activities! Kids will delight in exploring everything from phonics games to mazes, word association, matching, coloring, listening, and more.
  • 6 different learning methods! Get a dyslexic reading aid for kids that’s built on multiple research-based approaches to learning, giving kids a chance to see what works best for them.

Phonics Help for Struggling 7 – 11 Year-Olds

Sound Bytes Reading produces amazing results for struggling readers, for those who need to finish phonics after beginning with a different program, or for older English Language Learners. This approach works well for students who have not had success with other methods. The 90 stories and accompanying skill lessons take students up to a beginning third grade reading level. A carefully sequenced list of recommended books helps older students go on to reach at a fourth to sixth grade reading level.

Most students are able to complete the program in just four months, with 15 to 30 minutes of instruction per day. A spelling game is included to help students develop accurate spelling skills. The simple, clear instructions in each lesson are easy for any parent, teacher, or tutor to follow.

Phonics instruction is brief, focused on only a few sounds at a time, and strongly supported with practice reading decodable stories that students enjoy. The lessons build students’ confidence along with their reading ability, helping them become skilled and independent readers.

Phonics Help for Struggling 7 – 13 Year-Olds

Blast Off to Reading! works well for children ages 7-13, who are reading below grade level. This is for children who have dyslexia, speech delays, auditory processing disorder (APD), and other learning difficulties. In just 50 lessons, this multisensory, Orton-Gillingham-based program will systematically teach your child to read starting from the most basic units of sounds to multi-syllable, complex words.

Each lesson includes a new sound or rule, followed by several exercises, which review concepts taught in the lesson as well as those taught previously. This provides the perfect blend of reading and writing with review. Consequently, children will know their sounds and see how they are put together to form words.

The Blast Off to Reading program includes highly structured plans that gradually build in difficulty. It offers a more mature approach for students who are older. Lessons require little to no prep or planning. This colorful book includes large text and a simple layout, making it visually appealing to struggling readers.

This program also includes an answer key, spelling help, phonics reference charts, and optional supplemental online teaching tools and activities. Parents, tutors, and teachers alike will find Blast Off to Reading easy-to-use and highly successful.
