First published in 1903 and written by M. B. Synge, The Growth of the British Empire takes students through all the major events in Western Civilization. It begins with the earliest recorded history and ends with the nineteenth century.
This particular book includes stories on the revolutions in South America and Mexico, the Boer War in South Africa, and the exploration of Central Africa. Furthermore, it includes stories about the Greek and Italian wars for independence, the Crimean War, and the American Civil War.
Additionally, it includes narratives of the opening of trade with Japan and China, as well as the rebellion in India, just to name a few. While statesmen and military commanders figure heavily in the narrative, it also presents stories of explorers, scientists, artists, authors, and religious figures.
The author writes in an engaging fashion, using dialogue frequently to bring scenes to life. She juxtaposes events happening at the same time in different parts of the world in a style reminiscent of the books of Genevieve Foster.
This series provides an excellent introduction to world history for readers in middle school up through secondary school. Black and white period illustrations appear throughout the books, as well as famous quotes and Bible verses. Students read this book independently.
