Christine Miller takes Old Testament history authoritatively. She also tells the history of other great ancient civilizations. She weaves them in and out of the Old Testament story at the proper places in the narrative.
A Single, Seamless Narrative That Preserves Guerber’s Style
A single volume of Guerber’s histories never completely told the entire story of the ancient world. So Christine Miller took Guerber’s The Story of the Chosen People and included chapters relating the history of the Sumerians, Egyptians, Phoenicians, Assyrians, Babylonians, and Persians. She wove them all together into a single, seamless narrative, carefully preserving Guerber’s own style. She includes an extensive bibliography of sources.
As with the other Guerber histories republished by Nothing New Press, this resource includes black-and-white illustrations throughout. Famous paintings of its historical subjects and photographs of the places described adorn the pages. Not only are maps present in the beginning of the book, but throughout the text as well, which greatly aids in making the narrative more clear.
As with the other Guerber histories, the pronunciation of personal and place names are carefully marked in the text upon their first occurrence. A complete timeline of the events and persons mentioned in the text, a thorough bibliography, and an index subsequently round out the book.
Although the publisher lists this text for grades 1-6, we find it best suited for grades 4-7. This is due to the difficult vocabulary and style of writing, which requires a seasoned listener and a strong, independent reader. This child reads this book independently.
