Hannah
Hannah, a nine-year-old blind girl, lives in the West of 1887. She longs to go to school with all the other children in town. Blind children, however, didn’t go to school. So, Hannah’s parents keep her at home, where she is safe.
Then Lydia Robbin, a strong-willed teacher, comes to town. When she arrives, she persuades Hannah’s mother to allow her to go to school. At first thought, Hannah is overjoyed! She finally will get to go to school, which has been a dream of hers!
However, in reality, she finds the first day to be a disaster. There are many obstacles, many of them people, that stand in her way. She hopes for better days to soon follow!
With tremendous courage, she proves she can learn by listening, and soon she can get books in Braille. In the end the children band together under the leadership of the class bully to earn money to buy her a Braille writer. This is a touching, believable story with strong characterizations and sense of place.
