The Hat
The Hat begins with the ordinary occurrence of Lisa hanging her warm clothes on the line to air out for winter. However, nothing else is ordinary about this windy day!
When Lisa’s woolen stocking flies off the clothesline, adventurous little Hedgie finds Lisa’s stocking and pokes his nose in. When he tries to pull it out, the stocking gets tangled and stuck on his prickles. And then, the real fun begins!
A mother hen comes by, then a noisy goose, a talkative barn cat, a playful farm dog, a mama pig and her piglets, and a pony. They all laugh at Hedgie, especially when he pretends he’s wearing a new hat. But in the end, it is clever Hedgie who has the last laugh!
And where is Lisa when all of this is going on? She’s in Jan Brett’s signature borders! You can see her there, getting ready for winter until she realizes – her stocking is missing. So, what does she do? Well, she enters the story to look for it, of course!
Finally, this book’s narrative storyline is not the only reason to fall in love with it! Its luminous paintings showing a Scandinavian farm and the snowy forest all around it bathe each page in lovely northern lights! And as the snow begins to fall, young children join in the adventure and laugh as they see it unfold.
