Laura Ingalls Wilder and Heart of Dakota

Heart of Dakota Tidbit

What do Laura Ingalls Wilder and Heart of Dakota have in common? South Dakota!

Did you know Heart of Dakota is located near Laura Ingalls Wilder’s homestead?  The Ingalls family moved to the De Smet area in 1879, at the beginning of the book By the Shores of Silver Lake.  Like many other settlers, free land brought the Ingalls family to Dakota territory.  The homestead can still be visited today!  Just outside our HOD Warehouse, cornfields can still be seen that look much the same as they did when Laura lived in South Dakota – though the size of the fields and the manner in which they are farmed has changed greatly!

Heart of Dakota is a Family Affair!

Heart of Dakota Tidbit

A Family Affair

Did you know our parents graciously watch and homeschool our children while we attend book fairs?  Nana Mellema, Papa Mellema, and Grandma Jackie have all taught from our HOD guides through the years too!  So, HOD is always truly a family affair – even when we have to be gone at a convention!!!

Have a great weekend!

Christian Quartet Music and Heart of Dakota

HOD Tidbits

The Love of Music Shines Through in the Heart of Dakota Curriculum

Did you know Carrie and Julie’s Dad sang in a Christian quartet called “The Reformers” for over 25 years? His quartet even made a record, gave concerts at local churches, and sang at his three daughters’ weddings. That is why you will often hear Christian quartet music playing as our sons and nephews pick and ship your orders in our Heart of Dakota warehouse! One of the favorite groups is The Kingdom Heirs which can be heard almost every week on the playlist. The love of music in our HOD guides also comes from the love of music their Dad had – we hope you enjoy the music in our guides as well!

Have a great weekend!
