A Look Inside How to Write a 5-Paragraph Essay

Let’s take a look inside How to Write a 5-Paragraph Essay! As a homeschool parent, does the thought of teaching your students how to write essays fill you with dread? Likewise, does the thought of learning how to write essays strike fear in your students?

The writing process can be intimidating, especially when students don’t consider themselves strong writers. From coming up with a topic to actually sitting down and getting thoughts onto paper, students can see the path to a well-crafted five-paragraph essay as being complicated and confusing. The truth is, the entire process is more straightforward than most students may think.

Many students have been led to believe that their ability to write an essay is primarily based on innate talent, but that isn’t the case. In fact, anybody can be taught how to develop and execute a strong essay, regardless of experience. So, let’s take the guesswork out of effective essays for our ninth grade students, and dive into How to Write a 5-Paragraph Essay!

What makes How to Write a 5-Paragraph Essay so special?

What makes How to Write a 5-Paragraph Essay so special? Where do I begin?!? This is a favorite writing program of mine. Clear, short, easy-to-read chapters, concise directions, meaningful exercises, excellent prompts, constructive prewriting lessons, practical editing tips, chapter quizzes, a fantastic answer key – but best of all? Writing instruction that actually teaches students how to successfully write a 5-paragraph essay!

Few writing programs extend their reach outside of the homeschool year. This writing program is different. Students can take this writing program all the way through high school and to college with them. It provides a writing roadmap that travels wherever students go because its method can be applied to any writing assignment. Its cover says it is “A No-Nonsense Step-by-Step Guide to Mastering Effective Writing,” and that is exactly what it is!

Why did Carrie choose to use How to Write a 5-Paragraph Essay in her plans?

Carrie and I have graduated all seven of our homeschooled sons from Heart of Dakota, and all seven have pursued (or are pursuing) various four-year college degrees. Business Finance, Information Systems: Cybersecurity, Business Management, History, Graphics Design, Digital Media, Business Entrepreneur – what do all of these college majors have in common? A LOT of writing. Yes, you read that right. A LOT of writing!

One-page essays on provided short topics, five-page essays with a choice of several prompts, twelve-page research papers on topics of personal choice, 50 to 500 word discussion board posts on given case studies/topics, 50 to 250 word replies to at least three other people’s discussion board posts, and the list goes on! The major didn’t really matter; all of them required writing.

Carrie chose to use How to Write a 5-Paragraph Essay because it lays a firm foundation for students to be able to write excellent essays. Learning to break down the process into simple steps gives students the confidence to tackle any topic, whether they’re writing on-demand or working within a longer timeframe.

How do HOD’s writing plans work?

  • Exercises to help your students review and retain essential information as they go through the essay writing process
