For reading, decide which level best fits your child: beginning reader, emerging reader, or independent reader.
If your child is a beginning reader ...
choose one of these phonics programs or USE YOUR OWN! Since I
believe phonics instruction is a very personal decision for each
family, I specifically designed
Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory to work with any phonics program that you choose. Both of the phonics programs listed below are easy-to-use, include short planned lessons with interesting stories, and are economical. Both programs
utilize one book that includes a teachers guide and a student book
all in one.
Reading Made Easy
by Valerie Bendt:
his phonics program
includes 108 lessons. The author recommends covering 3 lessons each
week with review between lessons. This plan will allow a child to
finish this phonics program in a typical school year consisting of
36 weeks. However, the author firmly emphasizes the necessity of
pacing the program as needed to help the child be successful.
Reading Made Easy is now available on CD. All 108 lessons are contained in PDF files which you can print from you home computer as you need them. The CD also includes an audio workshop by Valerie Bendt entitled "Teaching Your Child to Read."

The Reading Lesson
by Michael Levin and Charan Langton:
This
phonics program includes 20 lessons that are approximately 20 pages
each. For children under the age of five, the authors recommend
covering one page per day. For children between the ages of five and
six, the authors recommend covering two to three pages per day. For
children over the age of six, the authors recommend covering three
or more pages per day. They suggest that no longer than five to
seven minutes should be spent on a page and lessons should be under
fifteen minutes in length.
A companion CD-ROM
that follows the book is also available.

If your child is an emerging reader ...
choose to follow the
"Scheduled Books for Emerging Readers" found in the Appendix of
Beyond Little Hearts for His Glory, and in the Appendix
of Bigger Hearts for His Glory, or use your own
program. This reading schedule is recommended if you have already
completed most of your phonics instruction and feel that your child
needs a year to strengthen that reading ability. The schedule listed
in the Appendix has been carefully planned to utilize interesting
books that gradually increase in reading difficulty throughout the
year. Your child should read the assigned pages out loud to you.
