BASIC PACKAGE

Basic Package - $126.67 - Save $25.00 [Add to Cart]

The Basic Package is meant to add to the Economy Package. It provides 14 read-alouds that correspond to the history study. A daily reading schedule is provided in the Teacher's Guide. You may choose to have your 7th - 8th grade student read these books independently instead. However, in order to read these selections on his/her own, the student should be a strong, independent reader who is not overly sensitive. Otherwise, reading aloud is the preferred method for using this package. With either method of reading, it is important to keep in mind the mature themes (i.e. famine, death, war, poverty, persecution, racial inequality, disease, etc.) contained in this historical time period. This package is highly recommended, unless you need to economize.

EXTENSIONS

SELF-STUDY EXTENSION PACKAGE FOR OLDER STUDENTS - $169.80 - Save $33.00 [Add to Cart]

Adding this package to the Economy Package extends the study of history for students in grades 9 - 10. The books in this package are not intended to fulfill your student's high school literature credit, as students need to be reading separate higher-level literature to fulfill that need. Instead, the books in this package were chosen to help students experience various historical time periods, bringing the past to life through the pages of these books. A reading schedule for these books is provided in the Appendix of the Teacher's Guide. Due to some mature content and themes contained in this time period (i.e. famine, war, disease, martyrdom, mentions of suicide, persecution, revolution, discrimination, segregation, terrorism, poverty, communism, etc.), students younger than grades 9-10 should use the Basic Package instead.

2ND Choice

For literature study, 7th and 8th graders are recommended to use Drawn into the Heart of Reading Teacher's Guide and Level 6/7/8 Student Book (shown below). In preparation for high school level literature study, it will be very important for 7th and 8th graders to either use Drawn into the Heart of Reading or an equivalent program. For 9th grade students who have not had much formal literature study, you may choose the Level 6/7/8 Student Book for 9th grade literature credit (along with high school level literature). A reminder to use Drawn into the Heart of Reading is provided 3 times a week in the Missions to Modern Marvels Teacher's Guide. Please note, if you previously purchased the Drawn into the Heart of Reading Teacher's Guide for use with Level 2/3 or 4/5, you will not need to purchase it again. The Drawn into the Heart of Reading Teacher's Guide is a one-time purchase.

3RD Choice

For English, customize with the options below (or use your own text). English 6 is scheduled at two different speeds in our guide to allow you to customize the pacing to suit your child. Schedules include a choice of either the last half of English 6, for those who completed the first half in the previous guide, or all of English 6. Both schedules assign English daily. In order to keep the area of language arts in balance within our guides, while still using a rigorous English program, our goal is for students to complete English 6 by the end of grade 8. This will prepare students well for high school level English requirements. Students in grade 7, who have had little grammar instruction, should use English 5 instead (since it is considered to be a foundational level of the text).

Progressing With Courage:

Hardback Pupil Text: $21.43 [Add to Cart]
Teacher's Manual: $29.58 [Add to Cart]

Note: 9th - 10th grade students who have had significant grammar instruction, through completing English 6 or its equivalent, should use English 7 instead. This text is not scheduled within the Missions to Modern Marvels Teacher's Guide, but lessons are divided into days within the Rod and Staff text for ease of use. We recommend completing English 7 by the end of grade 10, spreading instruction out over two years if possible. The scope and sequence of this text is worthy of high school credit when used in conjunction with literature study, composition, and dictation.

Building Securely:

4TH Choice

For math, customize with one of the following math options, or use your own math program. The Missions to Modern Marvels guide offers a choice of Singapore Primary Math 6A/6B, Videotext Algebra, or , No-Nonsense Algebra, or Principles of Mathematics Book 1.

Each Singapore textbook/workbook set equals 1 semester of math. The Home Instructor's Guides for Singapore 6A/6B are optional. The Singapore Primary Math series ends with 6B. Page numbers for Singapore Math 6A/6B are listed in the Appendix of Missions to Modern Marvels. For placement in Singapore math, give the placement test at: www.singaporemath.com

Videotext Algebra and No-Nonsense Algebra both incorporate some pre-algebra, a video component, and follow-up workbook assignments. Videotext integrates Algebra I and II over 6 modules. No-Nonsense Algebra includes Algebra I. All students new to Videotext Algebra must begin with Module A, even if they have had prior Algebra instruction. No-Nonsense Algebra is a stand-alone Algebra I program.

Another choice is the Principles of Mathematics Book 1 by Katherine A. Loop. For a description of why we chose this option for math, please click on the following link to a thread from our message board.
