Missions to Modern Marvels
Wyatt has been reading about the Holocaust and the end of WWII. This difficult topic has been covered amazingly well in MTMM. My ds has an accurate picture of what happened without too much dwelling on horrific details. His oral narrations and written narrations, as well as his student notebook for MTMM have really shown the depth of his learning this week. He read out loud to all of us the number of Jews that were killed in each country, and the numbers were staggering. HOD has given him a great understanding of the time periods, and it has been shocking to him how recently these things he is learning about in MTMM have occurred. As always, HOD leads learning back to God's hand, and inspirational stories such as the incredible witness of forgiveness by Corrie ten Boom leaves Wyatt understanding that God is in control - always (as you can see by his written narration here)...

The intro to chemistry Wyatt is doing has been incredibly interesting for him. He cannot wait to pull out his goggles, gloves, and smock, and get to experimenting in his 'lab', a.k.a. our kitchen. :D The kit in MTMM has been easy to use, complete, and full of great experiments he has done 99% independently - with me in the vicinity for safety reasons. :D I have loved the balance of experiments, scientific method lab sheets completion, living books about scientists, and science resources in general. Wyatt continues to enjoy science so much, and I am so thankful to HOD for this through the past 10 years of use! :D

The passages in dictation are getting more and more difficult, and still Wyatt keeps steadily moving forward. Doing dictation over the past 6 years from BHFHG to MTMMM has done more to improve Wyatt's spelling and proper use of punctuation than anything else, save copywork. :D Here he is happily holding up his last passage, and showing off his favorite drink for our midpoint meeting time... hot tea with a LOT of lemon juice! :D

We are on the final pages of Singapore Math 6B, and Wyatt is wowing me with what he can do! This math is difficult enough that I stay right by his side the whole time to help. I sit with the answer key and the HIG 6B in hand at this point, and we both have our markerboards in hand to work through problems together. I let him try on his own, check the answer key, and if he is wrong, we look at his work and figure it out together. I did not realize the HIG's have the fully-worked solutions in them for reviews and practices. I have not needed nor wanted the HIG's until now, but I sure DO love them for the close of 6B!!! I snapped a picture of him with his textbook (I let him write right in the textbook - they are inexpensive and it is a real time saver that doesn't effect his ability to do math), with his markerboard, and of the HIG answer key...

This has been a super week for the two of us! I am really enjoying MTMM and our midpoint meeting times. I am thankful for it being the glue that holds the two of us together through the onset of these teenage years. Oh, and the "Who Am I?..." Bible study, prayer request, and Faith Bible Quiet Time along with Hymns for a Kid's Heart are allllllllll my 'helps' for Godly character training right now. I am oh so thankful for the Christ-centered focus of MTMM.

Creation to Christ
Riley is learning the geography of the Holy Land and really enjoyed his history project of making a map of the tribes in Israel and Judah. He worked hard to use playdough to shape each tribe's land shapes and make flags for labels for each of them. The last day of his history project, he studied hard and could remove all the flags and put them back in the right places without the aid of a map. This was all part of the HOD plans - love how spreading the history project out over 3 days helps it really resonate...

Riley's histroy notebook is coming together so nicely. HOD make the most beautiful notebooks. Here is another history project he finished at the start of this week. It shows the dividing of the 12 tribes between Rehoboam and Jeroboam. He forgot to write his written narration in his history notebook, and accidentally wrote it on notebook paper, so we just cut it out and glued it in...

I love how my dc are often dressed up in this or that from their playtimes and come back to doing school still wearing dress-up stuff while they settle in to read a good book. Just fun, isn't it? Neat to see them learning in such an informal setting with such delight! :D

The prewriting we do in "Write with the Best" is almost more important than the actual writing, I have found. If we do a good job in the prewriting stages of plans, the actual writing of the piece is a snap. It is well worth the time up front! Here is our prewriting for Riley's description of a person, the parts we hi-lighted to include in his description, and then his first draft paragraph he wrote today. HIs character is named "Skittle" and owns a Sugar Shack, but his dad is a dentist, so he flosses regularly. I thought this was a pretty funny, creative description that shows off Riley's sense of humor (and love of Skittles)!

Riley is in Singapore Math 4A right now, and he is learning about larger number multiplication and division. I like to use markerboards for this, with me writing a problem, him working it while I write the next problem on a second markerboard, and then us switching. We do this for the Textbook portion together, as this is my teaching part. Then, for his independent workbook part, he uses the markerboard himself. Singapore does a super job of modeling several different methods to solve problems. I've seen our different dc often choose different methods, but they still arrive at the same answer. Here is a picture of Riley with the markerboards, and another picture of the 3 methods taught that day...
Image Image

Don't you just love it when learning naturally connects across the subjects without it being 'planned' per say? :D In history "The Story of the Ancient World", Riley read about Elijah, and in R & S English, he read about Elijah from the Bible (a different story, but still a neat connection). :D In WWTB, Riley learned how to write an organized paragraph describing a character, and in R & S English Riley had to write an organized paragraph with sentences of varied lengths describing Elijah's story from the Bible. The other week, Riley read a poem by Robert Frost in R & S English, and he is studying Robert Frost's poetry in CTC. There are so many connections like this every week with HOD - it is an awesome way to learn that helps my dc connect and retain so much more! :D

What a super week - hope you had one too!

Little Hearts for His Glory
This week we read about how Native Americans cleverly fished at night. They set a fire in their canoes, on a mound of dirt, and rowed to the middle of the water. The fish froze being blinded by the light, and the Indians could spear them. EVERYONE loved acting this out in our kitchen sink by spearing (wax paper) fish with spears (toothpicks) as big brother shined the light to stun the fish...

Emmett learned about the Pilgrims coming to America on the Mayflower this week. Big brother helped Emmett act out the Mayflower crossing the ocean to land at Plymouth Rock. Emmett LOVES the activities he gets to do in LHFHG. Here he is stepping across the ocean on his 'boat' to reach the Plymouth Rock on the other side. Always the actor, he wiped his forehead upon arriving and said, "Thank heavens we are finally here!"

I always have my two older sons stop in my bedroom in the morning to say their Bible verses they've memorized for HOD during their Bible Quiet Times for me. I am doing my Bible Quiet Time, and hearing their verses from their quiet time is just always special. I read Emmett's Storytime to him then, but this morning he surprised me by coming in my room and saying, "I will now say MY Bible verse for you now, just like the big boys." And he proceeded to say his LHFHG verse for me. :D Precious. I think we'll keep that tradition now. Here he is reciting his Bible verse later to his stuffed bear, which he also enjoyed immensely! :)

We are having such fun with the hands-on math in LHFHG. The quick sketches we do for math storyboards make acting out the stories in a hands-on way a breeze. Here is a scene with a house, a pond, and a tree. We acted out stories requiring subtraction and wrote the accompanying subtraction equation on a markerboard. By the time he got to his math workbook, it was super easy for him to do. :D
