We got a good start in unit 11 of Bigger Hearts. We made up a few of the Franklin projects - my ds thought they were ok.
What he enjoyed the most was all the drawing. This week in R&S we did everything orally since he is behind in 'writing'. Then that gave him a few
lines each day to 'make up' previous written work. He can tell me the answers & rarely make a mistake.

For my 5yo we did Unit 1, day 5 - Unit 2, day 2. He really enjoys the Reddy Fox story.
The R&S workbooks are too easy for him, so I got the 1st grade Thinking Skills and it was a little better.

Our week was messed up so we only got 3 days of school. Yesterday was our town's Veteran's Day Parade, so I turned that into a bit of an educational lesson for them.
So we had a 'field trip' morning I suppose. :)

Missions to Modern Marvels
Wyatt has hit his stride in MTMM now! We are in week 7, and he now has a good grasp with what he is doing. He is absolutely loving the Reading about History "All American History" book he is reading. The colored photographs, pictures of actual documents/letters, etc. are fascinating, and the text itself is actually very living. I think it is somewhat difficult to know WHAT is important enough to focus on for history within the Modern Times. I don't envy the task that author had ahead of her. It is so much easier to see what was important looking back many, many years in history, as opposed to determining what constitutes as truly important history in more of the here and now. Well, "All American History" along with HOD's other book selections manages to know just what to focus on and for just how long to achieve an excellent balance. The History Student Notebooking pages are fascinating, and the photographs of famous people, primary source documents, and period memorabilia only work to enhance the learning. I snapped a bunch of Wyatt's notebooking pages this week, as I have not done that yet. Though some of these are from units past, I thought they would be fun for you all to see anyway to get a glimpse into MTMM... :D

This week in Unit 7, Wyatt got to design his own World's Fair ride. This was a blast! :D I thought it was pretty creative when he described it to me. (BTW, I always have him describe his artwork to me, as his oral descriptive abilities outweigh his artistic abilities, and prove to me that he truly did put a lot of thought and effort into it, though the actual drawing may not show that. ) So, here is his ride where you ride in the cars and must shoot the targets that pop up with the hope that you shoot enough targets to actually pay for your ride, making it a free ride. :D Fits nicely with the economics focus in MTMM, don't you think? A ride like that could even make me want to work on being a good 'shot.' :D ...

Wyatt's written narrations are starting to show more and more personality with better use of descriptive words. He also has begun to work on having a variety of sentence lengths, which helps his writing to flow better than it did before when they were often all quite short in length. This written narration is about the Chicago Fire, and how Dwight Moody was preaching there when it started. I liked his opening sentences... "The town of Chicago was abuzz with the news that Dwight Moody was preaching there. Little did they know the horror that was coming. 3000 people filled the church that night..." I also liked these descriptive words/phrases he used... powerful sermon, perished, acres of ground had been consumed by the fiery inferno, though the fire was a disaster hope shined through it... as well as his happier closing sentence... The city rebuilt and has a high population of churches to this day. Take courage those of you with dc just starting to do written narrations - great things comes to those who wait!!! :D Wyatt's progress in this area has been slow and steady through the years. I am happy with where he is in this skill set now. :D
Image

We are really enjoying the "Snapshot in Time" skill in the plans. It has photographs of journals, newspapers, events, people, etc., and then Wyatt gets to write a synopsis or compare/contrast two things. He really enjoys it! :D On the bottom of this picture, you can see my typing of Wyatt's narration too, which is something we do off and on in the plans in MTMM. I used Carrie's idea of having him say it as a voice memo on his IPod, and that helped me be able to 'keep up' better as I typed rather than him saying it to me and me trying to type fast enough. :D I'm a fast typer, but he's a faster talker. The IPod worked well. :D
Image

I have liked the "Economics Principles" Wyatt has been learning, and he really enjoys reading his economics books -they are very living! :D In today's economy, this kind of practical instruction about economics is very important. I can see the wheels turning...
Image

Love, love, love the science! The new lab sheet is very mature - Wyatt is loving chemistry. PTL, I sure didn't in school. Nice to have him enjoying it so much! :D
Image Image

I think I'll make a post on the main board for our DITHOR project, as this is getting long! :D We are really loving MTMM. Hope you all had a super week!

Creation to Christ:
Riley has completed a full unit and a day in CTC now! He is so excited about his History Student Notebook. He has been working on writing smaller, and not s-p-r-e-a-d-i-n-g out his words. I really like having a designated space for him to do his work in, as Riley is my little honey that could go on... and on... and on. Limits are good for him. :D
Image Image

The DK Illustrated Bible and Music for Riley's Bible Quiet Time are so neat. He feels very grown up doing his own Bible Quiet Time this year. We had a mishap where he memorized the "Scripture Focus" rather than the "Scripture Memory Work," but blessedly we figured it out before he got too far into it. His Phil. 2 CD really helped him out there. He said, "Oh! I'm supposed to say the verse in the song? Wellllllllll, let me just sing it for ya, Mom!" And he did it perfectly. Too cute! There really is not a better way for me to wake up in the morning than to hear Wyatt singing his Hymns for a Kid's Heart, Riley singing his Phil. 2 CD, and Emmett and I cuddling to read his LHFHG Storytime in my bed. Homeschooling with HOD is such a blessing! :D

I am glad that Riley and get to read and discuss "Genesis Finding Your Roots" together for his Bible Study time. He made a really neat flipbook for his history project that he glued in his HOD Student Notebook, and it went along perfectly with what we were reading in Genesis. He drew a neat synopsis of the three uses of the word created found in the Bible when doing the Genesis study. I am finding this study just as interesting the second time around with my second child. It is deep! I continue to learn things too, like created here meant "bara", made out of nothing... can you imagine? Our God is awesome indeed!!! :D
Image

The watercolor painting in CTC was such fun this week. I like how it is planned in small sections of work each day. It gives time for the background paint to dry, and it gives just enough hands-on creative work to each day without taking the day over. :D The Robert Frost poetry along with the painting is lovely. Here is Riley's tree and copywork stanza from the poetry...

Those are just a few of the highlights of our week in CTC! :D Hope you all had a good week too! :)

Little Hearts for HIs Glory:
An actor is born. Emmett, I believe, could be the first successful actor in the family. :D He adores the dramatic play in LHFHG, and he is quite convincing, I must say. Older brothers stop their work to watch, and clap profusely as Emmett does a grand bow at the end of his act. He LOVES it. :D This week, Emmett reenacted Joseph (the stuffed shark in this picture) first wearing his grand, coat of many colors, going away and squandering his early inheritance, coming home in rags to his father, and receiving a warm welcome of love and forgiveness from his father upon his return...
Image Image

But the best performance was definitely Emmett as Lazarus. He truly got into it! He felt real sadness at Lazarus dying before Jesus arrived, and true joy at Jesus bringing him back to life again! It was neat to watch...
Image Image Image

Emmett's art project of the Good Samaritan was such fun to make, though I had to put a halt to the 'oiling' and bandaging for fear the entire man would be covered up...
Image Image

Emmett's handwriting is beginning to improve, as is his coloring! Notice the kangaroo is actually a befitting color brown. HOORAY! :D He also loved the artistic painting project...
Image Image Image

We start our day reading LHFHG's Storytime in my bed together as we cuddle. It is such fun! Emmett was fearful for Danny Meadow Mouse when he was stuck in the tomato can, but he laughed and laughed when Reddy Fox's temper got the best of him and he kicked the can, letting Danny escape. Here is his note to Danny Meadow Mouse about his keen sense of smell, and about what each of them can smell...
Image

Math... ahhhh... snacks... what could be better than that? Here Emmett is learning his ordinal numbers. HOD's hands-on math activity had him eat the appropriate snack under the ordinal number I called out (i.e. eat the third snack). I thought it was very sweet that Emmett chose to run and give his 3 mini-marshmallow snacks (his favorite) to his big brother Wyatt working in the other room. He also gave Riley the BIG marshmallow. I love how HOD is teaching our dc to be givers instead of takers! :D
