Doing research in Preparing

For the research, Wikipedia is WAY overkill for my daughter to get anything out of the reading. She is reading about a 5th grade level (being a little generous) and her comprehension is not that great. (16 yo from Liberia with some major learning glitches)
What could I use for her? She LOVES to do school and learn and wants to do whatever she can and it would be great for her to be a little independent. (for both my time and her "self-esteem")
Any suggestions?
She's getting a kindle for her birthday today so I didn't know if there was something I could put on that also.

We're using a World Book Encyclopedia set that our library was giving away. It's possible that there's a children's encyclopedia that could be purchased for her Kindle, but I'm not sure...

I hope you find something for her! I could be wrong, but I think it would be fine to do the research part with her for several weeks to help her along with it.

Our Public Library had the World Book Encyclopedia online. You have full access to the World book website for free. I think it is usually like $50. You might see if your library has the same. Those articles are definitely shorter, but I know with RTR he sometimes couldn't find the answers to the questions.

Right now this is something I do with my kids teaching them research skills. It doesn't take long. I show them how to scan to find answers.

Another option is to purchase a children's encyclopedia on cd rom. There are a few on amazon.com

I try to search for a kid friendly version of whatever we are researching. If I can't find it, I make a research page for them with bullet points or I highlight parts from Wikipedia or another source. You might try googling "Ice Age for kids" or the like.
