HOD and homeschooling through challenging seasons

Post by LynnH » Thu Apr 13, 2017 10:19 am

I just wanted to take a minute to say I am so thankful for HOD this year. I have been thankful for it every year, but this year even more so. My ds suffered a concussion on Feb 1st and he is still dealing with constant headaches. He has just started a medicine we hope will help. We had to take a few weeks off of school and once he started back he has done lots of 1/2 days with some full days. Without HOD I don't think we could have figured out how to school during this time. HOD is like an old friend to us after so many years of using it. He can look at his 2 page spread and pretty quickly figure out which boxes he can handle that day and what order will be best for his brain. We had to stop Chemistry for a bit and it was easy enough to mark that spot in the guide and now go back to that and work through. The boxes for all subjects are also in bite sized enough chunks that his brain doesn't get too overwhelmed. It also helps that the material is so interesting that he is willing to school even with a headache. He has found this years history to be very interesting and even though I offered that he could quit the living library, he didn't want to because he loves the books so much. He also really likes the lit books so that has helped him keep going with that subject.

Carrie I just have to say thank you again for writing this curriculum. HOD has truly helped us be able to get through his Junior year. We still have a ways to go and we may have to tweak a few things and give maybe only 1/2 a credit for bible, but I truly don't know how I could have handled all of this if we were using something different.

Lynn,

I'm so sorry to hear that your son is still struggling with headache issues. I pray they will resolve. Life often does have unexpected challenging seasons, doesn't it! It is so true that the times I have been most thankful for HOD have been those challenging seasons in life. :D Having the HOD guides allowed our family to go forward with some stability even when we had the constant ups and downs of my Dad having pancreatic cancer for two years.

Thanks for sharing during this difficult time. We will uplift your family in prayer.

Blessings,
Carrie
