Skipping A Guide

Post by anne0rdman » Wed Oct 28, 2015 10:14 am

Hello! This is our first year with HOD and we are loving it! I placed my 10 year old, 5th grade daughter in Preparing this year. I think she probably could've handled CTC just fine but didn't want to overwhelm her with an entirely new curriculum.

I am thinking ahead and we are either going to have to skip a guide or not complete all of the guides. I've had quite a few people recommend using MTMM for 9th grade and "beefing it up". But to me it seems more important do do all of the actual high school guides. But I'm not sure which one I should skip. I've also had people recommend not skipping anything and doing the guides over summers, more of a year round schedule. That just won't work for our family. Is there any place in the guides where there isn't such a huge step up? What would you recommend?

Thank you! Sorry if my post is a little all over the place! Just trying to get my thoughts and plan together!

It is not generally advised to skip a guide. There is a big leap from Preparing to R2R. You might look at the placement chart and the week preview of R2R to get an idea if your daughter would really be able to skip a guide (http://www.heartofdakota.com/pdf/rtr-we ... glance.pdf). If you have doubts, or are unsure, I would encourage you to view the threads below.
Here (viewtopic.php?f=6&t=6571) is a great thread on beefing up guides for highschool. The last two posts by Carrie specifically address a child hitting MTM in the 9th grade. I have viewed threads in the past and I can tell you that the child who lands in MTM in 9th grade will still have an excellent high school experience.

Ideally you don't want to skip a guide. I would recommend doing Preparing and CTC and then if everything seems very easy for her and she isn't being challenged then relook at the placement chart and see if she could skip a guide. There is a pretty big jump from Preparing to CTC and CTC lays the foundation for the guides that come after it which is why I wouldn't skip that one. We loved all of them so I can't really suggest one to skip. I know some have skipped MTMM so they start high school in the high school guides, but MTMM was my son's second favorite guide and for many people it is their favorite so if you do that you would miss some really great books.

Bumping this up as I have a very similar situation with a couple of my kids... I'll be tagging along and listening in :)

The benefit of doing the High School guides is having all the credits there for high school. But I can tell you from my experience, having the HOD guides and having your child right where they fit best, is better than jumping ahead and then having the frustration of a child who is not quite ready for the workload.

Now you say your child probably could have done CTC this year instead, so maybe skipping isn't a problem, but I would suggest the same as LynnH - do CTC next year and THEN skip RtR if it seems like that would work.

If I keep going at my current pace with my oldest then MTMM will be 9th grade. I think that will be more than sufficient and I think all the credits will work out.
