High School Q. Regarding Jr. Year

Post by Homeschooling6 » Tue Jan 21, 2014 9:43 am

Hi, Ladies, it's been a while since I've posted. My high school son absolutely LOVES using the World Geo. course. My 8th grade daughter is in her second year with using HOD and loving Missions to Modern Marvels.

My question has to do with my high school son. For his 9th grade year we used Bob Jones which was Cultural Geography: http://www.christianbook.com/geography- ... /pd/250936

This year he's using HOD's High School Guide for 10th grade. Next year he'll be in 11th and he hasn't had American history (in high school), and am wondering if I can continue with HOD for the remainder of his high school years. He loves, loves, loves, HOD, that I really don't want to switch him. Any ideas?

I'm thinking he might have to switch and I can continue with the rest of the kiddos using HOD through high school. My son just has switched curricula so many times. The longest we used the same programs was Bob Jones and that was only for 8th and 9th. He enjoyed it but it took forever.

Thank you!

So how have you differentiated last years Geography and this years Geography on his transcript? It would seem he would still also need World History which he could do next year with the new guide and then for his senior year he could do the Early American History guide with maybe then watching some documentaries that cover later key events in American History. I know my dd went to ps up through 9th grade and they skipped so many things in history. She came home after Honors Modern History and didn't know who Ronald Regan was!

I just had another thought what if you got the extensions for MTMM that pertain to American History or maybe you already have them and have him read those and maybe watch the American testimony DVD's this summer or next? That way after he completes The Early American HIstory High School guide you could call it just American History.

Thank you Lynn, I like the idea of getting some American history in during the summer. I can even have him continue school through the summer of his last year in high school.

With his 2 years of world geography/cultural he has studied lots of the ancient times as well so I was going to say World History has been covered  .

Still thinking . . .

Have you thought of going backwards with HOD and beefing it up for him? Use the credits he has now for World HIstory and World Geography and if your dd has done Rev2Rev and MTMM then you just get the extensions and make it high school credit worthy. It sounds as if that might work better than trying to use the World History guide and add in American history along the way if you are considering World History credit already complete. Just a thought as most states require some sort of 1/2 credits for Government and 1/2 credit for Economics (sometimes called Free Enterprise or exchangeable with Personal Finance), and 1 credit for American History.

Ok I have a few more thoughts. I am familiar with the BJU book because my dd did it for her World Geography year. What if on the transcript you bumped the World Cultures and Religions that he is doing this year up to a full credit instead of a 1/2 credit based on the work he did with the BJU. Or maybe even 1.5 credits, but I don't know how often people do 1.5 credits for one course. Then this year would be World Geography and then next year World History and then the American. I really think the World History guide will cover much more than what he has covered so far and will be much more of a history course. You will get a better idea of that once Carrie posts her sneak peak of history for that guide.

Also if he is college bound just some advice from someone who was just there with my dd. Don't count on doing much school the summer after his senior year. One the colleges wanted to see a completed transcript by late June I think, and two our summer was extremely busy with trying to squeeze in family time, work so she had some money for college etc. Also she was in the I'm done with high school mind set.
