language arts with Beyond

Post by fullhands_fullheart » Mon Feb 11, 2013 5:46 pm

hi, we have decided to use Beyond with our 2nd grader. Am I correct that there is no Grammar section in Beyond? All I saw in the sample guide pages was a reference to doing spelling words under the Language Arts.
We used Sing Spell Read Write for his 1st grade LA, so should I keep going with something? I see Rod and Staff level 2 isn't scheduled to begin until the Bigger guide.
Advice?
Thanks!

I think in Beyond they just have grammar one day a week. Sorry, I'm not much help.

I'm hoping someone else with some more experience will chime in but......

We are in week 15 of Beyond. Spelling and copywork is 4 days per unit and then on the 5th day there is a short grammer lesson. My dd just turned 8 and is in 2nd grade and is finding these lessons very easy and I am just fine with that. There is so much reading and literature (we are also doing DITHOR) that she is getting the principles without realizing it. I am perfectly content to wait until next year for formal instruction.

You are right. There is just one day of grammar each week on day 5. There will be plenty of grammar in Bigger. :)

Kindra,

There is a listing of the concepts covered in the once weekly grammar lessons in the PDF of Beyond's Introduction on our website. This will give you a better idea as to what is covered within these lessons. :D

This is copied from the Beyond guide's Introduction: :D

One day in each unit focuses on basic grammar, mechanics, and usage skills. Lessons are mainly oral using guided conversation between you and your child. The lessons are puposefully short and designed to focus on one rule or concept per lesson. In this manner, students are exposed to a variety of language skills in a low-key way. The concepts in the lessons are only introduced and are not meant to be mastered at this level. :D

A brief scope and sequence of the grammar, mechanics, and usage concepts is listed by unit below (Number ‘1’ corresponds to unit 1, number ‘2’ corresponds to unit 2, etc.): :D
1 - sentences and fragments
2 - run-on sentences
3 - sentences: subjects and predicates
4 - sentences: statements
5 - sentences: questions
6 - sentences: questions and statements
7 - sentences: commands
8 - sentences: commands

15 - initials of full names
16 - capitalizing ‘I’
17 - proper nouns: names of days of the week
18 - proper nouns: names of days of the week
19 - proper nouns: names of months
20 - proper nouns: names of months
21 - writing dates
22 - common and proper nouns: places
23 - proper nouns: addresses of places
24 - common nouns: things
25 - plural nouns: adding -s and -es
26 - commas in a series
27 - action verbs

29 - verbs: using ‘was’ and ‘were’
30 - verbs: using ‘has’ and ‘have’
