Is it necessary?
So...I was talking to one of my friends about my kids doing well in cursive (bad handwritting just happened to be the topic of conversation-wasn't bragging ). He said that he didn't know they still taught cursivce in ps. Is he wrong or is it the norm that the schools are moving away from cursive? Do you think it is important that kids should learn cursive? Just curious.

I live in WA and I know the schools in our area are doing cursive in 3rd grade. I have no idea about other parts of the country.

Re: Is it necessary?
Well...many of our local ps districts do not teach cursive. I spoke with some of the teachers and it is no longer recognized as a necessary skill in our local district. We still taught ds cursive, and made him use it for 4 years. This year we let him choose for everything except his HOD CTC notebooking pages - that is required cursive. I expect everything to be neat, regardless.

Re: Is it necessary?
Our SD schools still require cursive to be taught in third grade. In fourth grade cursive is strongly encouraged. In fifth grade, it is up to the teacher. In sixth on up it is up to the student. I think it is worthwhile for students to try their hand at it for at least a few years so...
*they can sign their name
*they can read cursive writing
*they can determine whether printing or cursive is more their style
