DITHOR 2/3 or 4/5

Post by 2littlemisses » Wed May 07, 2014 8:03 am

We are going to begin DITHOR. I have been reading that if you have not started the program to start with the 2/3 student book. I will be using it for my now in 4th and 2nd dd. They both read a bit above level. Do I have my 4th grader read the 4/5 level books and do the 2/3 student book? My 2nd grader with do the 2/3 student book and 2/3 books.

We are in our 5th year of hs and have used HOD the whole way. I love HOD and I love the women on the board!!

We hs all year so we can take breaks when it suits us.

That is recommended. However, if you have done HOD all of the way, your older daughter might be ready for 4/5. Is she doing all of her writing in HOD? If writing isn't a struggle you can do the 4/5. It's up to you on where you think she'd do best and enjoy the most. :) No matter which student book you choose you can do the 4/5 level books. You want to choose a book that isn't a struggle for them to read out loud so they can "work" with the book. The 4/5 book has them reading out loud to you less.

I think it also might depend SLIGHTLY on what guide you are going to be using. Some guides schedule DITHOR 2-3 days a week while others do it daily. If you plan on having your kids do DITHOR together and one is in a guide that only schedules DITHOR 2-3 days a week, I would do the 2/3 book for the oldest with the goal of doing DITHOR daily (as scheduled in the younger's guide). Also, make sure to look at the books and make sure they are ones your kids can read fairly easily. There are so many ways to judge reading level, so make sure you pick a set of books that will work well for each child. (For example:Some of the ER books have reading levels from 1._ to 4._ based on the measure used to determine reading level. Carrie's indication is normally in the middle of these.)

Thank you ladies.

DD 10 is at the end of BHFHG and DD 8 is in unit 6. DD 10 will be starting PHFHG in July. Writing has not been a struggle. GASP, I have been reading about how that it is a challenge to do BHFHG and PHFHG together. God guided us to HOD and He won't leave us now. :D Maybe I will start DD 10 in the 2/3 student book and 2/3 books. If it's not challenging enough we will move up the reading level but stay in 2/3 student book? Even though we do school all year, summer is lighter for us. Then in the fall bump her into the 4/5 student book? I've looked at the sample 4/5 student book online but I only have the 2/3 student book now. I will order it when I order the PHFHG packages.

Love to be able to talk this out.

You sound like you have a good plan. Use what you have for now. :)
