Little Hands to Heaven Unit 12

We started going full speed with LHTH last week. My ds is now 5 :D We had a busy week last week planning his "Safari Party" it was fun and the kids seem to enjoy it.

This week's lessons about Samuel and his obedience to the Lord's voice helped encourage the children that they need to obey right away with a happy heart (especially my pre-schoolers). That when we learn to obey Mommy and Daddy that we can learn later on in life to obey God and do as He asks of us.

We discussed how sad things happened to Israel because they stopped following God and that when you stop following God you usually have stopped praying to Him first. Luke remembered how he was sad when he fell and got a concussion and I reminded him of something that happened earlier this week and how he was sad and he remembered his shots and how we prayed for him. These discussions also encourage us as Mom's to keep our prayer life on the forefront!

The Finger-Play was especially fun and how quickly the kiddo's learn the days of the week. We enjoyed this one and since Grandpa was visiting from Minnesota he joined in with the little ones and they loved it.

One my kids favorite Letter Activity is putting blocks in the shape of the letter. This weeks letter was J. They always continue long after. I did have to help Luke this week to get the tape in a curve for the J's. He had fun decorating his J at co-op with jewels and coloring the jacket that one of the Mom's drew!!

The other thing I have enjoyed are the Bible Activities where you give your child instructions on a scene from their story to draw. I have like them so much, I have added them to the art activity book as definite keepers:D With my older one who was is not as detail oriented I had to help him trace his hand and Luke did it on his own, but he noticed right away that one of the fingers was a little thicker and I had to really encourage him to let him know that it was o.k. :D

It was fun for the kiddo's to anoint Saul after drawing the picture. I was amazed at how well Luke did the picture just from telling him without showing him how to do it. This is where you compare (not in a negative way) with your older child. This is after all only my 2nd child I am teaching! They are so different in so many ways, it even bring a new perspective to the pre-school program!

We also went to the doctor's this week and all was well with Luke being in the 91st percentile for weight and 98th percentile for height. So he looks more like a 6 year old.
He has been so excited to do his formal phonics and we have an old school house reader and he read some words. I actually even covered up the pictures. One thing is, that he needs to work a little on his speech since he neglects his "s"'s in the "s" blends and he has a hard time with the letter "r" "sounds more like he says 'auw". So words like rat and ran pose a little problem, but nothing severe. I have been blessed since the doctor told him that he needs to practice he excepts correction in speech even when his little sister tells him! so we keep on working on words like sleep and scooter etc. etc.

Bigger, Unit 8 (1/2 speed)

This week I did not do so good taking pictures of our activities!

We learned about "King" Phillip's War or the Indian war and how Phillip had much Wampum, we made Wampum belts from purple and white rice. We did so at co-op and the kiddo's had a blast doing it. I had them look in the history book and practice on a scrap piece of paper first what they wanted to draw. They came out so nice :D Since we place most of our art into a "Picture Story Book" and we write key idea, we did not have to do the notebooking! By making the belt the kids realized why Wampum was a good trade since it was very time consuming to make and we did not even bore holes in our beads. How tedious it was.

For dictation we were doing 3 lessons a week and have moved on rather quickly so we are slowing it down to 2 lessons so we don't get in level 3 dictation too quickly since it gets hard fairly fast! Even though the kids seldom make mistakes. The most interesting thing came to me in doing dictation at co-op. The boys (there are 2 boys and a 1 girl) are usually so excited to get together that they rush through their work and make more mistakes than when they are at their own homes. So I spoke to them and cautioned them about rushing and the last 2 weeks they have been fine :D

For math we will be caught up to the Unit we are in by the time we get to Unit 13. We are going into Unit 4 and Elijah has absolutely loves his "math games" as he calls them and wants to keep playing them! He is doing very well and again with Grandpa here who is in accounting, we showed him some of the ways SM teaches and he was very impressed with it! My Dad was a school principal in South America, but his major was in math and he also likes the way Singapore teaches. That has brought me much comfort since math remains my really challenging area!! Now I am starting to do better at it myself PTL :D

I did take a picture at piano lesson this week. Ds is doing well according to his teacher and is ready to move to book 2 He is so excited! A friend from church who is a very anointed musician (worship leader) has a music school. Elijah started taking lessons last October and is going to be in his first recital at the end of May :D

Our science experiment had to be adjusted here in our humid Florida weather! We used a balloon to show static electricity, because nothing we tried made us see a spark. PTL for the internet. I was able to Google it and we watched a video on u-tube that showed us a beautiful spark. It was a great discussion point and the kids all remember the sparks they have felt on our "cold" wintry days. We also went skiing in Colorado this past February and my ds remembered the frequent shocks we got there and how even our hair stood on end when we took off our fleece jackets.

Cursive is another thing we do full speed and we are loving it! Literally the kids can't wait to learn the next letter and learn all the letters in their names so they can start writing their name in cursive. handwriting is not ds's strongest side so I have to be a little lenient with him. As great as he is with gross motor, fine motor is still growing and improving. Even his coloring and drawing skills are slowly improving so I am very encouraged that we do as much drawing for our science notebooks, it seems more meaningful to him and he seems to enjoy it. Even when we do vocabulary he is doing well coming up with drawings.
We now do 3 vocabulary words, just not on the same day :)Image

Learning about the planets have been a big hit! He wanted to draw them himself and I pulled it up on the internet like Carrie recommends and he went ahead and colored them as good as he can. We did not do the scale drawing, but I explained to him what a scale drawing is and we had great discussions on the size of the sun from earth and how distance makes things appear smaller. Than we remembered a lesson we did in Beyond where you had to take an object back to see how the size appears smaller.

Thank you again Carrie for a wonderful curriculum to use and follow! Now on to Unit 9! :D

LynnH,

I read your blog and I remember reading earlier this week how Noah blessed you by dancing a Waltz with you. That must have truly brought much joy to your heart. What an awesome reward of your hard work and dedication to homeschooling! Thank you for sharing.

Ladies,

I really enjoyed reading your week-in-reviews. We are still schooling onward here and will be busy through the end of May. :D I enjoyed the sneak peeks into each of your homes, and I loved hearing about your favorites from the week and seeing the way your kiddos are growing and changing. Thanks for sharing, as it inspires so many! :D

Blessings,
Carrie
