Little Hands to Heaven 1/2 pace Unit 10

It has become a bit slow to do half pace and we are preparing to go full pace this coming week. Since we have 2 other families in the same guide and we do a co-op we were going a bit slower since one of the Mom's is very ill with her pregnancy and was unable to keep up with her Pre-schooler.

This week we only had 2 days left, but we add in some other stuff to fill our days. We do OPG (phonics) and Early bird we are now in 1B. We also add in some critical thinking and other worksheets and activities to fill in other days for now.

Luke was so excited to be able to read a couple of words this week. :o Yeah for Luke, it is only my second one teaching how to read and it is intimidating once again, but by the grace of God we will do it. :D

How incredible it was to build the walls in different shapes, I had older brother help out with the walls and Luke build his own rectangular wall. Challenging activity for him since the blocks fall over and he gets frustrated very easily, but at last we worked on it and he managed to keep it up long enough for a picture for Daddy :D The kids all picked a shape that was their Jericho and Luke was the leader counting out walking around 7 times and than yelling so the walls could fall down. As good little children I was blessed that they did not let the blocks get all over the room and under the couches

We had great fun timing different activities to see how long a minute lasts. Here are Luke and Mae running around the wall that separates the kitchen and living room.

Luke was instantly interested to show how the people of God won the battle when God had the time stand still by Joshua going up on the mountain. Here they are rejoicing that God had won the battle for the Israelites. How amazing it is how our God worked out to have the universe stand still to save His people!

Luke has fun playing different phonics games and one of them is to line up the alphabet as a train. He continues to enjoy the 'Hide and Seek" pages from LHTH. He also enjoys listening to stories and I am blessed that brother does not mind reading books to him before nap time. It is a great thing to have two kiddo's to do the Fingerplays, because they have a great time doing it together!

Last week we made the wall that Rahab let the spies down and if Daddy can help me get it off his camera I will add it in!

Annagrace (Mae) who is turning 3 in a month here was sitting across from the table when I was helping Luke make his 3's and she just started making 3's all over the back of her coloring page! She loves to do school and when I do flash cards for Luke for the alphabet, she jumps up and says it's my turn and she does very well.
So I figured we need to hurry up with Luke and finish LHTH so she can start. She joins in now, but we will have a blast as girls doing LHTH for the last time for me  .

Bigger 1/2 pace Unit 7

This week was filled with lots of fun learning again.

We learned how mold fossils are formed and the experiment was a great hit. We choose some little animals and the most popular was the dinosaur. The oil really did help to prevent the clay from sticking to the animals. What really blessed me was that Elijah wanted to draw the experiment all on his own without me modeling it for him :o . And he did a fantastic job. :D Yeah!

We also started a new story time genre and book and he was more than thrilled to start the adventure book. Unlocking adventure by rolling the dice and seeing which of the columns tells about the adventure book was great and a fun way to start off. Thank you Carrie for making school a fun learning experience. :D
We are reading Snowtreasure and I can't wait to read more. Doing two chapters a day seems hardly like a tease for both of us!

Because of sickness the previous week we did not have co-op, so we did our art project this week.(at my prego friends house with her 2 kiddo's) The kids were especially thrilled to make their own clay, with the recipe in the manual, measuring out with different size measuring cups. We got to use 2/3 and 1/3 to make a cup and 1/4 and 3/4 as well. I was surprised how well the kids understood the concepts. The icing on the cake was to make the Wampanoag (however you pronounce that  ) wigwam 3 dimensional and putting square cereal on it.... Interesting that the Wampanoag Indians from the tribe of Massasoit used clay to make there Wigwams. Putting the cereal on was a bit challenging since it kept falling off, but we worked through it and everyone ended up very proud of their creation. proudly presenting!Image

How much more fun and interesting can it get in one week? Even looking back I am blessed at all my kiddo's are learning by using HOD! We had Astronomy this week and loved the activity. We have a huge back yard and ended up with many balls (2 boys) so we used balls in the backyard to represent the different planets. Elijah did not know all the planets, since we have not officially studied this before, however he got a model from our neighbor of the planets so he knew some of the names. The big huge white ball represents the sun!

Another mind challenging thing beside learning about NOUNS this week in English, was to learn about a bay, an isthmus and a peninsula. Hands on activities are wonderful to cement these concepts. As mentioned, English was a bit challenging since we learned that there can be more than one noun in a sentence so now he is trying to always find the other one. It 's a bit confusing for him to do, so we have been asking the questions who and what as we go about our day to find out what the nouns are in a given sentence. Well, not all subjects are as easy as others :)

The excitement of the week hit when we began the hands-on activities for MATH, finally he is in 2A and is enjoying the math activities. It has been a while since we did the Intensive Practice book (not needed, but we jumped into Singapore after MUS and it was a bit confusing). I have figured that if we do math full time we will catch up by unit 13 and perhaps than Elijah will be ready to do Bigger at full speed or at least a 4 time a week schedule.

Today we finished our Timeline and our Notebooking and Elijah did very well drawing the Rice and Indigo plants as we learned about the wetlands in South Carolina this unit and how these plants grew well in that region.

Oh moedertje- I just love seeing your pictures each week & reading about your sweet family! They all seem to be doing so well! :D It brings back wonderful memories of when we talked about Joshua in LHTH & gets me excited for next year when we will get to go through it again. How fun for Luke to be reading!! And Annagrace to be able to write the number 3! I'm sure it is such a joy to watch them learning!

We have been learning so much at our house this week as well! We have really been talking a lot about various "heart issues" that each of us (including myself  ) have been needing to work on lately. I love how HOD gives precious opportunities to talk about these various things with our little ones. We talked a lot this week about acting in ways that honor God- at church, at home, everywhere. We also talked about truly believing in & trusting & loving Jesus- & how often this is shown through our actions (although actions are NOT what saves us- that is grace alone). What a blessing to see our school-time be a time to discuss such important topics with our children!

Each day, we start with our Bible story- everyone LOVES this (on Tuesday, we got to read 2 stories- the girls were absolutely thrilled :D )!
Image Image Image
After our Bible story, we often do the "Fingerplay"- This week our girls put on their "twirl skirts" for the part... "If you believe in Jesus spin around" :D Somehow the baby managed not to get trampled.
Image Image Image
Their favorite activity this week was playing a math game where they put any hearts that landed cross-side-up under the "heaven" index card & any with the cross-side-down under the "hell" index card. It was a good reminder that we need to believe & love Jesus.
Image Image Image
We also had fun using play-doh to make V's! :D
Image Image Image Image
P.S.- yes, I realize my children were in dress-up clothes for most of the week (I think I wash as many dress-up clothes each week as I do regular clothes. :D )
I hope everyone else had a great week!
