Hello Everyone,

It is great to be back in action after a break. The girls were a little stir crazy after having a week off of school, but I needed to do the first part of my fall cleaning for the inside and outside of the house and at the middle to end of this month I'll do my second part. I also restock supplies and materials needed, make copies, go to doctor's appointments and get flu shots, and all those other errands that can wait until our break. But when I pulled out the guides two weeks ago, my kiddos were leaping for joy. They were so happy to start back up again. And Julie, I just literally saw your post today and thank you for comments. I love looking at your check-ins as well as others because it's so encouraging to see other veteran HODers that have done it before me. It's also so exciting to see things that I know my girls are going to love doing (Draw and Write through History and Notebooking pages) and it just confirms that Heart of Dakota is the right fit for our family. Well here is the link to my blog and I hope everyone has a blessed week.

Blessings,
Angela

USII High School:
Wyatt has been doing 5 days worth of plans since the start of this school year, as we generally go 'all in' the first part of the school year. This allows us to take off time as needed around Christmas and in the spring, which are busier times for our family and for our jobs. Wyatt has been studying Women's Suffrage, the Roaring Twenties, Prohibition, and the UNIA and the NAACP. His talking points oral narration was on women's suffrage this week. There are suggested headings provided in the USII Heart of Dakota guide's plans. To prepare for this oral narration, Wyatt lists his headings on an index card to plan his oral narration, and he also figures out how to incorporate the visual aid that is part of his USII full color notebook. Usually the visual aid is a political cartoon that was famous. We sit together in the addition, me in my comfy chair with the USII guide propped open and the USII history book he read open to the start of his reading, and him on the day bed across from me with his index card and his visual aid in hand. I like to check off the headings in the USII plans that I hear him include as he orally narrates. I also skim the book he read as he narrates, which helps me know what's going on without having to read the entire book myself. I also listen for his incorporation of the visual aid, but mainly, I am just listening quite enthralled with how interesting history really can be when taught this way!!!

He has come into his own style of orally narrating, and he really is fun to listen to! He loves history, and with all of the background he has from reading all the awesome Charlotte Mason style living books he has from the past years, he sounds as if he almost personally knows these people from history, or as if he really was at the historical event he's sharing. All of those years of fledgling narrations, stumbling over words now and then, losing the main point here and there, mispronouncing names, and forgetting places... so worth the culmination of becoming a the good, strong, interesting, engaging, confident oral narrator he is today! Narration is worth sticking with until it's good. And it does become 'good' - better and better, bit by bit, until one day you wake up and you have a pretty articulate 12th grader that can knock your socks off with his storytelling! :D :D :D I remind myself of this each day I work with our younger 2 sons on narrating. The finish is worth the journey. Here are some of his USII History Notebook entries from this week...

He has really been enjoying his living library book "Miles to Go for Freedom", and here are some of his triple journal entries from his readings this week...

R & S English 8 continues to clearly and systematically teach Wyatt strong language arts skills in grammar and in step-by-step writing. It's not flashy - but then he'd be on overload if every single school subject was made to be flashy. This is hands down the best English program I've seen! It gets the job done!

World Geography:
Riley has been learning about Persia's Empire, Herodotus' Travels, and Alexander's Exploration this week in history. The Archeology Book has been fascinating for him to read, and Mapping the World with Art has him systematically each section of the world he reads about, following clear directions on a CD-rom. He just started reading Herodotus, and he finds him witty and interesting all in one. One of his favorite things is to watch the Scenic Cruises of the World DVD, as well as to watch the Mysteries of the Ancient World DVD. These DVDs truly bring to life visually all of the places he is reading about in A Book of Discovery and in The Seven Wonders of the World. Here is Riley with some of his note booking entries from this week...

For World Religions and Cultures, Riley has been completing his bookmark entries each day. He loves to choose which response he wants each day, and the follow-ups are intriguing without overburdening his response to his readings. He is reading Mimosa, and her life story is clearly one that makes a person marvel at the way faith in Christ can help someone through truly difficult, nearly impossible times. Riley also completed his World and Religions and Cultures notebook entries...

Creation to Christ:
Emmett has been learning about Egypt at the Time of Joseph, and his favorite thing this week was definitely making his shepherd headdress and having his feast with his brothers! The history projects are so fun, and they are a terrific connection to what he has read for the week! He definitely remembers the history he has read better because of the hands-on assessment follow-ups of the history projects...

Emmett also finished up Unit 3 at the start of this week, as we are doing 5 days' worth of plans right now instead of 4. He really loved his 3-D star history project and was so proud of it...

Here are some of Emmett's note booking entries this week...

Another favorite of Emmett's this year its the watercolor painting he gets to do in conjunction with his poetry readings. He is getting better at following directions, and though I don't think being a professional watercolor painter is in Emmett's future, he will forever appreciate its beauty and what the artist needs to be able to do for it to be a masterpiece!

Emmett is clipping along in dictation - hooray!

Emmett learned about predators and prey, and he loved the 'hunting' activity in Land Animals... that had him being a cougar hunting deer. I do hope he has better luck with deer hunting this deer hunting season here in SD though; as not many cougars made it, and quite a few deer did!
