Mama caught a cold this week. But school prevailed! I'm VERY thankful this week for how well HOD prepares my girls to be independent learners!

I'm so thankful for that too! I'm not sure I would have even known to teach the kind of independence HOD has taught my boys.

I feel like these days and weeks are flying by! Here is a peek into our weeks in CtC and MtMM :)

Preparing Hearts for His Glory:
We are really hitting our stride in this guide now! I notice it especially with the rotating history box. Emmett can do his timeline on his own, following the directions in the PHFHG guide carefully. After we've found the vocabulary words he's chosen in the context of his history book and he has predicted each of their possible meanings, he can then look it up in the dictionary, copy the proper definition, use it in a sentence, and illustrate each word by himself. Huge progress from me assisting with each part of this earlier! For research, he will get the laptop and look up the word in wikipedia, sitting right next to me, as I work with Riley on math. He still needs a little help with this, and I'd never let him do this solo anyway (I'm always right by the boys or someone else is when searching for things on the computer - just good accountability). He needs to work on skimming and using the clickable table of contents sections to locate answers. But, he can probably find about 75% of the answers on his own now, an improvement. For Geography, he gathers all needed resources, like the globe, maps, books, etc., and reads through the box to be prepared to locate areas, answer questions, and review geographical terms. He is ready when I come to work with him!

His Independent History Study box is completed as 'homework' at night. He does well with completing one subject at night, and it is teaching him to be responsible to get it done. Right now he is reading "The Young Christian's Introduction to the Bible" and often orally sharing a favorite part with me after his reading. It works wonderfully well to 'sandwich' our Bible learning like this! Starting our day in PHFHG with his Bible Study box, and ending the day with his Independent History Study box keeps us focused on the Lord from start to finish- I love that!

Right now his favorite thing is for me to read "Fountain of Life" though. We are so into this book! It makes the Bible times come alive in such a real way! We both were so dismayed at the Sadducees and Pharisees plotting to kill Jesus, as we as Eli's father, Amos, dying without believing in Jesus. We have had some amazing discussions from this book! It partners with what we are reading in Grandpa's Box and CHOW so beautifully. We cuddle up on the couch under an electric blanket for these readings. We both look forward to them so much! He also loved the project this week, which had him making is own perfume, like the expensive perfume Mary washed Jesus' feet with.

Missions to Modern Marvels:
Riley has been learning about Pearl Harbor, the Flying Scotsman, and Watchman Nee. There are some difficult things to read, and yet this is a part of history that must be studied and learned from, as so many gave their lives. I'm so glad we waited until now to study this at this depth, as the Holocaust is coming next. Riley's mature enough and has grounded enough faith to be able to read about this now. I'm especially thankful for the resources of books like "Hero Tales" and "Shadow of His Hand" and "Gladys Alyward". They keep Christ at the center of history, which is so important to me. The Lord is the ultimate Hand behind the writing of History, for He is sovereign. I never want my children to think otherwise. He is not surprised by anything that happens - He is the author of it ultimately - and we need not picture Him holding His head in His hands thinking He's so surprised or taken unaware by what is happening in the world. This constant reminder of the the Lord being a part of everything is a priority of mine in our children's homeschooling. There is no real knowledge without the Lord, so keeping Him front and center is #1. Thankful to HOD that the daily plans in each guide honor that!!!

USI High School:
Wyatt is enjoying his Chemistry course this year. The text he is reading is quite narrative, and the experiments keep the hands-on component necessary for truly learning about science intact. The text has clear directions, and the experiments are directly relevant to what he is reading. I love that we do not need to leave our home for my son to have a quality chemistry with lab course in high school! I am also thankful the answer key is clear cut, so he can make sure his experiments are on track...

In R & S English, Wyatt had to use multiple resources to research honey bees and then give an oral presentation to our family about his findings. He did such a good job! He has an ease about him speaking that is all his own style. The outline he made with the data from his research gave him a solid structure to follow for his speech. We all enjoyed his presentation!

In history, Wyatt has been reading about John Brown's Raid, the Election of 1860, Secession, and Fort Sumter. His oral narrations using notes he has taken on topics of his choice have been outstanding to listen to - such a fun stage to be at with narrations! His written narrations show all his hard work earlier in becoming better and better at writing narrations and editing narrations carefully have paid off!
