Preparing Hearts for His Glory
Unit 2
The Learning Through History focus of this unit was “Life After the Flood”.
Reading about History… I didn’t get any pics snapped of this, but I especially enjoyed Emmett’s oral narration of the reading on Day 3. I’ve learned to follow the ‘helps’ in the Appendix, and he is learning to narrate well. He has always had a natural affinity for memorizing certain phrases with new vocabulary. He adds this easily to his narration with no prompting, so it makes listening fun for me! Though he still needs to work on not starting each sentence with “And then…” sometimes.

Storytime… Emmett continues to pour over the beautiful illustrations of the book “The True Story of Noah’s Ark.” It is making this well-known Bible story come to life for him in new ways…
Image

History Project… Contrasting Warm and Cool Colors…
Image

Rotating History… For Geography we have been discussing how the Earth rotates on an axis, why the equator is so hot, why the North and South Poles are so cold, and reviewing what the 7 continents are…
Image

Independent History Study… Drawing and coloring Adam and Eve to show people are created in God’s image – we have intelligence and the ability to reason…
Image

Poetry… Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Bed in Summer” was our poem this week. Emmett did a writing activity using his sense of sight and sound, mimicking the way Stevenson wrote his poem. The prewriting activity helped him gather his thoughts, and he did a super job of writing his stanza…
Image

Language Arts…
DITHOR was such fun as Emmett digs into his Bible with Scripture Sleuth as his guide to solve mysteries! I love seeing him cuddled up in the chair with a blanket reading – and LOVING reading. This is how reading is meant to be! Much more memorable than short, meaningless stories written solely for the purpose of creating a worksheet. I’m so thankful for DITHOR! It teaches my children all they need to know about genres, story elements, all levels of reading comprehension, Godly character traits, vocabulary, prereading, projects, etc. BUT, it does so in such a way that it keeps the LOVE of reading thriving! Having taught DITHOR for 14 years (tutoring students the first handful with it; and then using it with my own children), the results are well-proven to me…

Bible Study… No pics this week, but I just wanted to mention that I love that Emmett is learning to have his own Bible Quiet Time 2 days each week! I know this is a training year for this, but next year he will take this over. Reading from his own Bible each morning, praying using the ACTS model, memorizing Scripture, and singing praise music that is Scripture set to music – high on my priority list for him to do.

Math Exploration… No pics this week, but I will say Emmett did a super job with his large number multiplication! I think it is due to Singapore’s excellent teaching, but also to his diligently doing his Bible Heroes Skip Counting CD! He knows his facts quite well, and the ones he doesn’t have memorized, he can quite quickly skip count to using his fingers. I don’t mind the use of his fingers, as long as he arrives at the correct answer fairly quickly. I know from our older sons, he’ll drop the crutch of using his fingers on his own eventually.

Science Exploration… What causes ice to melt? Emmett found out by experimenting with different ways to get ice cubes to melt. He chose to run hot water over an ice cube in the sink as one method, and put an ice cube in a small saucepan on the oven burner. He predicted the one on the burner would melt more quickly, but alas, his hypothesis was incorrect. The running water melted it more quickly! He had such fun trying out each of his methods and timing them to compare his results to write his conclusion! The lab sheet is something I want to help Emmett improve upon. It is our last subject of the day, and I can see it could be rushed (by the both of us). So, it will be a goal to help him improve in this area gradually, by taking time to think through his ‘guess’ better, by having him draw a better rendition of his ‘procedure’, and by having him use more scientific terms in his ‘conclusion’. But, overall, a good week in science!

Missions to Modern Marvels…
Unit 2

Reading about History and Independent History… For Riley’s MTMM Student Notebook, you can see his timeline entries, his written narration about Hudson Taylor, his map he studied about the 9 unreached provinces of China, and more…
Image Image

Storytime… No pictures this week, but Riley started a new book called “God’s Adventurer” about Hudson Taylor. He loves to read, so this should be a good one!

History Project… Riley’s history project was painting Chinese characters meaning “Christ’s Disciple”. It was so special to him that he asked if he could keep it in his room for awhile and put it in his notebook later. I thought that was fine!
Image

President Study/State Study… We visited Rapid City, and we collected SD State Information for Riley’s State Study. Here are my 4 famous faces with Mount Rushmore’s 4 famous faces…
Image Image

Rotating History… “Whatever Happened to Penny Candy?” has been an interesting way to study economics. One thing I want Riley to work on is using newly learned terminology in his economic principles. The Key Idea in the MTMM guide is very helpful in correcting this, though I don’t expect nearly that much detail as that is not intended…
Image

For Worthy Words, Riley read Hudson Taylor’s letter and did a Socratic Discussion with me about it…
Image Image

Independent History Study and Nature Journal/Biblical Self-Image… No pics this week, but I will say the Biblical Self-Image study is coming at the perfect time for my 13 ½ year old. He is now shaving! How did that happen?!?

Bible Quiet Time… See Riley’s Common Place Book grow, full of Bible verses he is memorizing this year…
Image

Language Arts… DITHOR – What will the mystery object be?!? For Riley it was a lantern because that was integral to his “Sparrows in the Scullery” book. For Emmett it was his Bible because Scripture Sleuth solves his mysteries with it every mystery!
Image Image

Math Exploration… Hot Cocoa is a part of math time for Riley. I put the kids’ snack/drink time during round table math. I have a list of snacks and drinks they can have (most of them healthy, but hot cocoa not so much). They love this time!
Image Image

Science Exploration… Time to put on the goggles and get to doing some serious chemistry! Riley loves it! This week Riley did an experiment to learn that oxygen is necessary for burning (combustion). Because CO2 is heavier, it can be used to extinguish fires…

United States 1 High School
Unit 17

Well, of my 3 children, this guide was actually the easiest ‘transition’ of all at the start of this school year! That is because Wyatt began this guide the last half of last school year. Returning to a guide is oh so wonderful, I must say! Wyatt is ahead in his guides and always has been, as he’s been on the youngest side of the target age range. This has given us some wiggle room in completing his high school guides that we have absolutely loved! The plan is to stretch out his last 3 high school guides, so he can focus on working to earn money for college, focus on enjoying his time with his little brothers, focus on enjoying hunting/fishing trips with his dad, and one day each week focus on helping me with homeschooling his brothers (his idea – which I have so appreciated). What a blessing this has been!

A focus of mine at the start of this school year has been to plan time in my school schedule to correct Wyatt’s work. Independent work that is assigned in high school for students does not mean it is independent of teacher responsibility! Correcting, editing, discussing, and monitoring daily work is my responsibility, and last year I fell down in certain areas. So, this year, I had the revolutionary idea of actually adding time in my schedule to correct work right after it is completed. I do not know WHY I have never done this before, but I haven’t. I’ve always just used the suggested time allotments for each of the boxes of plans to set up my school schedule. Well, it turns out piles of correcting don’t work well for me. So, this year, I put time in to correct each child’s work each time I meet with them. This has been so helpful!!! To be honest, my oldest son in high school doesn’t love this revolutionary idea of mine. He liked flying under the radar, I guess. However, I am skipping through the tulips! Gone is the feeling like I am never quite sure how certain facets of school are going. Gone is the feeling like I can’t every quite say ‘done’ in regard to my correcting/editing. Gone is the feeling like I’m shirking my full responsibility as a teacher. I am LOVING this approach to correcting/editing/monitoring! When the ‘school bell rings’ that school is done for my kids, it is done for ME too! Love that.

Well, as I mentioned, I’m going to try to snap pics for each subject area for each of my kids this year, in the hopes of celebrating progress. So, here goes!

U.S. History… Summary Narration of The Book of Heroes history reading. I starred the right notebook entries as I heard each one being mentioned as he read his written narration aloud to me…
Image Image
Talking Points Oral Narration about Noah Webster…
Image Image

History Activities… Mapping activity about the Expansion of the U.S. to 1833…
Image

Living Library… Double-entry journal entry about The Adventures of Lewis and Clark…
Image

Government and Foreign Language… no pics this week! I’ll try to do better next time!

Constitutional Literacy/Devotional Bible Study rotating subjects… Response to given bulleted topic for Constitutional Literacy…
Image

Bible… Review of Acts in The Most Important Thing You’ll Ever Study: New Testament…
Image

Science with Lab… Chemistry Experiment with Bunsen Burner…
Image Image Image

American Literature… Literature Journal entry from Up from Slavery…
Image Image

Composition/Grammar… In Their Sandals story that Wyatt wrote and typed…

Math – Algebra II… Image

Thank you ladies for posting! I love to see what's ahead for us, but I also love seeing how a guide we have already done looks in another family too :)

We are absolutely loving MtMM this year! This is our second year in CtC, and I'm appreciating it even more the second time around.

I included these comments on your blog too, but I wanted to post them here as well in case you saw this first!!! :D :D :D I need to teach now, but will be back to check out CTC at my first opportunity!!! :)

I loved looking at your son's beautiful work! He is a wonderful artist, with a whimsical sense of humor that I love! Having all boys, I totally get the fire-breathing cow and the Supa Slide ride that may be your last! In fact, they'd probably stand in line for a chance to ride either the cow or the ride. Gotta love boys, right?!? Thanks so much for sharing and being an inspiration to so many using HOD - you are a blessing!!!
