We only did school 3 days this week - still got a lot accomplished!

In LHTH we did Unit 15 about Solomon, and reviewed the letters "A-L". My dd even asked for school today and tomorrow. :D We did do it today, to finish out the unit.
Tomorrow, no.
She loves adding in extra Bibles, to get more story. She was a lot of fun listening to today while I talked about Solomon's strange wives. She said you say "NO!" to false gods/idols. She got it all right. Today was special since it was spent with only her for school.

In Little Hearts we did Unit 24. One of the things he learned about this week was Peter the Great. He remembered the most about that day. We took a break from the Reading Lesson and let him read a storybook. When we start back next week I will do a quick overview on what he knows ahead, and move him up, about 2-3 chapters. He is bored with it right now. Wants to read real books. We started a trial run of spelling, and he amazed me with what he knew. Will probably start list 1 from Beyond next week. :)

In Preparing Hearts we did most of Unit 1! :D He is really enjoying the drawing, and can't wait to delve deeper into the science, history, (and drawing).
He groans with English, but he is doing well with it. He surprised me with how well he did the Poetry and Bible. We started out on Tuesday at half speed but he was done in less than an hour, and was ready for more. So, we are attempting 3/4 to full speed for awhile to see how it goes. I do not plan to add DITHOR until after our vacation in mid-October. We will probably do half speed then for at least a couple weeks. He is doing everything as written except reading the Science - we are working toward that goal. :)

It was a really strange week. Other life and activities are picking up and I am really involved again this year, but it went pretty well overall.

We got 5 days of school done. LHTH unit 15, Beyond unit 2, and Bigger unit 27. At least two of the five days I was really distracted and it felt really rough. Thursday my girl in Bigger only got 1/2 of her work done, so we did 1 1/2 on Friday and she did well. She got up early that day so I was able to do her read alouds she missed from Thursday before breakfast. I am glad I am leaving read alouds for near the end, because they go pretty fast and we both enjoy them a lot. I did let her skip vocabulary from Thursday because... she doesn't like doing it and it takes her a long time. But we will keep working on it.

We tried making ink by the instructions in Bigger but it didn't really work. We were supposed to mix some soot from a candle with an egg white and honey. Either I didn't get enough soot, or I don't know. It seemed like I had a lot but it didn't color the egg white well (it seemed like it was still in chunks?). So we switched and did the wax seal on a letter instead and mailed it to her friend. That was fun and easy.

One morning we did school outside. Spelling and dictation with sidewalk chalk, math activity with pieces of sidewalk chalk, my 4YO's activity was jumping up and saying "YES" to good things and sitting down and saying "No, that's bad" to bad things (because David had sinned against God). The 4YO and 6YO had a blast doing that and wanted to keep going even after I was done. My 4YO wrote some "L"s with sidewalk chalk. If I hadn't had to keep diverting the 1YO from the street it would have been more enjoyable for me, but the kids did well and I felt like we made reasonable progress.

My girls love the "King David Learned to Lead" (LHTH) especially the part where you sing the "L" sound.

My 6YO did a lot better with spelling this week. Oh I forgot to have her draw a picture for her poem.... I will do that on Monday.

Sometimes I lament that my children will not become good at reading and following directions, because I am not good at it.

Week one is done!

Bigger- Unit 1
CTC- Unit 1

This post isn't unit specific, but it is about working out our daily schedule using the two programs and adjusting my thinking to meet my child's needs.
