Missions to Modern Marvels
Wyatt turned 13 yo this week - can you believe it?!? I don't know how he got to be a teenager, but it happened way too quickly. :shock: MTMM has been a super fit for teaching a teenager! I cannot tell you how much I am enjoying the discussions we get to have, and Wyatt appreciates being able to voice his opinion. The Socratic discussion was all about women's right to vote this week. We had such a good discussion about this. The speech we read provided a great sounding board for our discussion. It was especially interesting as we just recently listened to many presidential candidates and speakers address women's needs, which would not have probably been addressed at all if women were not voting. The reasoning in the speech provided more discussion about war/peace, and the decisions our country often has to make regarding our military involvement. The speech even led to us having a good discussion about Biblical roles of men and women! :D

The Biblical Worldview has been very timely with our new teenager too. We learned 'garbage in' = 'garbage out.' We had such deep discussions about how it is possible to find 'garbage' unintentionally, and that it is far too easy to be drawn into it that way too. The Internet, as well as other media forms, need to be constantly discussed. The Bible study was based on one of my all-time favorite verses, and one that I have tried (and am trying) to make my motto this year and this coming year... Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think about such things.

Reading Wyatt's prayer journal in his "Faith at Work" Bible study workbook has been neat. I like to write a comment each day, as his prayers touch my heart. Another thing I like to write a comment on is his Storytime bookmark - such neat follow-ups this year to Storytime! One last thing I write comments on is DITHOR Student Book - especially the Godly character days. These areas of MTMM are like a window into Wyatt's soul - I find I am hungry to read them, to see what is going on in him spiritually. It is an honor to be able to read them. :D

For Wyatt and Emmett's playtime together this year, I let them choose what to do together after they have played a board game. More often than not they choose to make something in the kitchen. I love to cook, but I credit HOD with helping my ds love to cook. I would have not let him do as much nor found the right kind of recipes for him to do more solo like MTMM is doing. Here are my serious chefs making our midpoint meeting snacks and drinks to order... :D

Wyatt designed the chef 'hats' and taped on the 'Quick Time Chefs' tags on them, as well as found the aprons for them to wear. Too cute! Hope you had a good week! :D

Creation to Christ:
The big event this week for Riley was our feast he put on for Creation to Christ! :D He was the star of the show with his shepherd headdress and his Egyptian palace bread. Of course, eating on a blanket on our living room floor was a blast for them too! :D Gathering the various things for our feast was fun, and you can see a more modern style of packaging than they had in ancient times for the almonds, yogurt, cheese, etc. on our tray...

Riley made the decision this week to get up early to do more of his school in his room. I think this is largely due to the fact that he rooms with his big brother who gets up early (his choice) to do his MTMM school, and he longs to be JUST LIKE his older brother. :D He has been setting his alarm himself, and gathering what he needs to take to his room the night before. I am so proud of him! :D He usually gets up early enough to do his CTC Bible Quiet Time, Independent History Study, and sometimes a portion of something else that is meant to be done independently. He always leaves himself 15-20 minutes of free reading time in his bed right before he starts his chores though - this is his favorite way to start his day. :D The new Max and Liz book is out, you know, so he cannot WAIT to read in the mornings especially these days! :D

I LOVE MY start to my day this year. I wake up, do my Bible quiet time, and then I call in the boys one at a time. Wyatt says his Bible Quiet Time verses he is memorizing for me - which I have found is important to do for his retention since he is memorizing huge sections of the Bible. Then, I call in Riley, and I LOVE THIS - he SINGS his Bible verses to me. :lol: CTC uses an awesome music cd that aids in memorization of Phil., and he sings it all with great joy and gusto! I had to laugh the other morning because suddenly Emmett burst through the door and started singing with Riley, then Wyatt came in and joined in, and I couldn't be left out and joined in then too! We are ALL learning Phil. thanks to CTC's neat music cd and Riley's singing it each day! :lol: After that, Emmett comes in and we read his LHFHG Storytime together cuddled up in bed. I love my start to my day this year. :D

Little by little, Riley is learning to 'shrink in' his cursive. He has been in the habit of s-p-r-e-a-d-i-n-g out his words in cursive. I think he thought it looked like more was written then (this teacher was not fooled, however). :wink: I am thankful for the boxes' dimensions in the CTC notebook helping him to learn to work within a space, though I know it will take some time to learn to do. He is already improving in this area. HIs CTC student notebook already shows improvement from Unit 1, and we are not that far into it.

Riley and I thoroughly enjoyed reading "The Golden Bull" for CTC's Storytime. Though I read it with Wyatt years' back, I still found myself wanting to read more each day, in anticipation of what was going to happen. That is just a great book. We are now reading "Boy of the Pyramids" and enjoying that as well. Riley especially likes the Storytime follow-up of writing 2 questions each on separate slips of paper and then drawing them out to answer. Sometimes he gets mine, sometimes he gets his own; sometimes I get his, and sometimes I get my own. What a creative idea for a follow-up, HOD! :D

Little Hearts for His Glory:
Many of you know my little Emmett was hospitalized after having a bad bout with the flu and being deyhdrated. Well, he seemed to have a reoccurrence of it again at the start of this week. :cry: After a few days he perked up though, and now he is completely back to being his vivacious self. I am so glad. :D Praise the Lord for good health! :D

This past week in LHFHG Emmett learned about Jesus' death on the cross. It was very timely as since he was throwing up, and Rich was out of town, the boys and I all had to stay home from church. This makes me very sad, as I love going to church and feel it recharges me for the week. I was missing it so that day! But, we were able to watch a Dr. David Jeremiah sermon together, and he told a story that fit right with what we had read in our LHFHG "Devotions for the Children's Hour" and our Bible Study lesson. It was about a country school that was full of such tough boys and bullies that no teacher would stay more than a week or two. A young teacher took the job though he was warned that he would not be able to last. On the first day, Tom - the class bully - bragged he'd have that teacher quitting by the end of the day. But the teacher surprised him by having the class help make some rules. He wrote them on the chalkboard - We won't steal each other's lunches. We won't spit or hit one another. We won't cheat, etc. The teacher then asked what the consequence should be for breaking a rule, and Tom quickly shouted 'TEN LASHES!'

Well, the next day, Tom said someone had stolen his lunch. After questioning the class, a 10 yo boy fessed up to it, and the teacher was so upset about the consequence he was to give. The boy had to take off his coat and had no shirt. When asked why, he explained his family was so poor he only had one shirt, and on wash day, he had none to wear, so he borrowed his brother's coat to hide the fact he had no shirt. After the first several lashes, Tom jumped up and shouted he would take the boy's place... for the boy was his brother. He took all the lashes for him, and there was not a dry eye in the room when it was done. This is like what Jesus did for each one of us, Dr. David Jeremiah went on to explain. After we watched this sermon, we went around the room and shared what it meant to us, and what we'd remember. When it came to Emmett, he told us that he'd remember how Tom was trying to be just like Jesus when he took the lashes for his brother because he loved him that much, though he didn't deserve them. "That is what Jesus is like," Emmett went on to say, "He died on the cross even though He could have gotten down at any time, and He did that for us. I love Him." It just was such a special moment! :D

Emmett is praying more and more these days. He asked to lead the prayer at one of the meals, which was neat. He is really thinking and learning so much from LHFHG, spiritually as well as academically. I am so grateful. :D Emmett has been choosing to decorate his Bible verse with stickers and give it to my Dad who is in the middle of chemo treatments now. My Dad really appreciates it and looks forward to receiving these from Emmett. The two have always been close, and this is one way Emmett feels he can cheer my Dad up and show him he loves him. :D

Emmett really loved the math activity where he got to glue 'petals' on a flower to match the number he inside. He loves to glue things, and he loves to eat things - so this was right up his alley. :lol:

So I wish I had some pictures for you, but my camera and I have a love/hate relationship. I love to take photos, but hate my camera. :D I've been wanting to post, but haven't since I have issues downloading them from my camera. Anyway, I thought I could do a post anyway, because I love reading everyone else's and I know how much the weekly review meant to me when I was researching HOD.

Preparing Unit 15-Coming into the Golden Age of Greece

We are all loving the Storytime book, A Triumph for Flavius. My children beg me to read more everyday. :lol:

One of my ds' favorite things is the Poetry Creative Writing Activity. The poem this week was At the Seaside. We talked about rhythm and he had to try and stick to the same rhythm as the original poem and if possible the rhyme scheme. He was able to do both adn I think he did a good job.

I love how geography is incorporated each week and ties in with the history. Geography has never been my strong suit, and I truly believe my dc are better at it than me at the ages of 8 and 10 thanks to HOD. When we were on our walk this week, we were constantly trying to figure out which direction we were going as we have been discussing the 4 cardinal directions.

We started Find the Constellations this week and my children are in love. Wednesday night after church, they went outside with my dad and tried to show him the Big Dipper. It was too cloudy though. :D

I'll share dd (8) written narration with you before I go. "During the Golden Age of Greece, Pericles rebuilt Athen because Xerxes burnt it down. Pericles taught the people to be artists, poem writers, and builders of buildings. They made theaters where people wore tragic and comic masks. There was a man named Phidias who made a statue of Athena and the Athenians built a temple for her. The Athenians put Phidias in jail because he put a picture of him and his friend, Pericles, on Athen's shield.

We are loving Preparing and are so blessed to have found HOD 3 years ago. :D

Great week of school in both Rev to Rev Unit 17 & LHFHG Unit 1! So thankful for HOD, especially when other things in life are hard. :D

We didn't get a lot of school done these past couple weeks due to illness, and my 8yo going on the church's Men's Deer Hunting Trip. :) Made him feel like a man. :)

BIGGER HEARTS
We finished Unit 13, & day 1 of Unit 14. The French & Indian War, and the start of At the Time of the American Revolution
The history activity on the last day, of paying a tax on his snack really helped him understand taxation a lot better.
We started on dictation and he has done very well, getting each passage correct on the second day. So we do about 2 passages a week. We tried again on cursive,
but it led to great frustration, so we will wait until after the new year.

LHFHG
We finished unit 3, did unit 4 and started on unit 5. His favorite is the Reddy Fox stories. He is really flying through math, I have workbooks for him, and we do the hands on portion of Little Hearts. He surprised me by saying the Unit 4 Bible verse before I could complete it. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

My LHTH child has been sadly neglected. She has entertained herself with the R&S workbooks - she loves these! - and joining in on the rhymes, stories, and songs of LHFHG.

Julie, so glad to hear your son is better! Hope the sickness has stayed at bay. It has been going around so bad at our church they rescheduled our Christmas plays. Loved seeing everyones weeks!
