Re: Large family moms - combining question

A friend of mine used both AAR and AAS, and the AAS was a fail for her too. We haven't started AAS yet, because I can only add one thing at a time or I get overwhelmed. I'm thinking that since I know the rules now, I can supplement any spelling instruction with the rules.

Re: Large family moms - combining question

Nealewill, We use AAR because we discovered that my 9yo was really struggling with reading. While I don't usually call it dyslexia, that's what it is, I just avoid the term. Since dyslexia is inherited, each kid of mine has a 50% chance of having it. AAR has been amazing, and I won't ever use anothe...

Re: Large family moms - combining question

Which guide are you using for the younger set? Do you plan on using HOD through high school for the youngers? What do you do for LA? Do you think you will use the notebooks in the upper level guide when you get there with the youngers? Will you do science combined (orally) when you get to that point...

Re: Science in CTC for older kids?

My oldest was always at the highest age range for the guides, and the science did "feel" light to me. I worried that I wasn't challenging him enough. However, he is in the WH guide now, and is doing very well in science. He's getting A's, is understanding, making connections, and actually enjoying i...

Large family moms - combining question

I'd like to hear from the large family moms, ones who've been homeschooling awhile. I have my three middle boys (will be 6th,4th and 3rd next year) combined in Preparing this year. They have been combined since the beginning. The year has gone well, but I've tweaked Preparing as needed. Only the old...

Re: If not R&S

My oldest has used R&S all the way through, though at times I was unable to do the work orally with him, and simply handed him the book and told him to get it done. I'm on the fence about it. It is much more than grammar. It includes a lot of writing and stylistic advice, and much more. In the gramm...

Re: beefing up Rev to Rev..any new thoughts?

We did Rev to Rev as written for 8th grade. I think the beefing up threads are usually indicated for high school.

Re: Stuggling to sound words out phonetically

I didn't mean to make you feel discouraged. I used TRL for my three middle guys, and found the same thing. Two of them are natural readers, one has some dyslexia issues, though I hate that term. ;) anyway, I had all that written out at first, but deleted because I really didn't want to disparage TRL...

Re: Stuggling to sound words out phonetically

Reading well, and being able to decode unfamiliar words needs to be at the top of your priority list right now. Things may only get worse, if you don't address it properly. NOt to sound all doom and gloom...Lol. :) Reading Horizons has a good online program that you can look into. We did TRL with ou...

Re: Dual enrollment

Dual enrollment rules will vary, but even if astudent does two classes per semester, that's four classes a year. So, to me, it's possible to do both, but I wouldn't. We've used HOD for seven years with my oldest, but are considering dual-enrollment online next year. If he does this, he will not do a...

Re: CTC Watercolor

I know they are probably capable of doing it independently, but having 4 who will want to do it (and only one guide) means I'll definitely need to be close by to supervise. I guess we could spend a few weeks training on proper set up and clean up, and then I could let them go it in the afternoon, du...

Re: CTC Watercolor

Thanks for the input. That's what I was afraid of. I want to do the painting portion, but the logistics of setting up and cleaning up painting supplies for everyone will drag it out to 30-60 minutes. So, I'll have to think about how to schedule that. I don't expect my little guys to do the CTC paint...

CTC Watercolor

Where did you display or store your paintings when they were done? We will end up with four+ paintings each week. Also, did you do the paintings as written, over two days, or all at once? I'll have three boys in CTC next year, one girl tagging along, and three little guys who will want to paint with...

Re: Breaking for Summer

We will finish at the end of May. We've had our best year yet, and are not behind or have need to play catch up. I'm truly concerned about how to fill our time this summer! :) Maybe HOD can put together some summer 'bridge' guides after the HS guides are finished. Lol. :) Totally kidding. ;) I feel ...
