Re: Question on CTC Unit 1 Day 1 Reading about History?
I have my dd answer those orally-they get plenty of practice with written answers through written narrations ( as you will see in Day 4 Reading about History) and short written answers in the Science box on Day 3 of the plans.

Re: Timeline With LHFHG
I don't think it would hurt, if you really wanted to do it, but I am thinking also that it is not necessary at that level. Carrie has been very thoughtful about skills progression through the guides, and probably has good reason for waiting until Beyond for making a simple timeline.

Re: Bigger with a 5th grader
Thanks for the response ladies. I was actually thinking about switching his R and S to level 3 or 4. He has never used R and S before and he is frustrated with level 5 review. Frustration is a good indicator to drop back a little-remember HOD recommends finishing Rod & Staff English 6 by the end of...

Re: Bigger with a 5th grader
My ds is 10 and in 5th grade. I am doing 5th grade rod and staff English and 2b Singapore. He can read well but his comprehension is behind thus the reason for placing him in bigger without extensions. Is this ok? Am I holding him back? Should I push him more or just let him be? When I look at the ...

Re: Am I doing dictation correctly?
I believe you should start with shorter phrases rather than complete sentences, and gradually build up. Otherwise, it sounds like you are doing the right thing. The aim is not memorization, but rather than the child learns to "fix in his mind" the correct appearance of all the elements of the passag...

Re: First Day of School
Thanks everyone :) Julie, thanks for the words of wisdom. I am happy to report the whole first week went just as well :D Keri did volunteer to do some yard work (one thing that was driving me nuts) and I had to remind the girls to sweep the floor downstairs and empty the wastebaskets. They are prett...

Re: TM in binders and a little organization
Now I want a pretty binder for my records and such :D I have a binder, but it's not pretty  For me, I love the lay-flat binding in the HOD guides, and since I am only using one, I don't feel the need to be able to separate units-the original binding works great for us; my dd is the one using th...

First Day of School
It went really well :) My daughters were up before me, getting their day started. By the time I got out of bed, dd 12 was hard at work on her Independent boxes in CTC and dd 14 was ready to go with dh to get her braces off :D By the time she got back, we sat together to review her schedule for the w...

You can print out the first week of LHFHG and Beyond to compare them side-by-side. http://www.heartofdakota.com/pdf/beyond-little-hearts-first-week.pdf http://www.heartofdakota.com/pdf/little-hearts-first-week.pdf Heart of Dakota has done a fantastic job of balancing the basics with the "fun stuff",...

Re: Update/not finished with bigger
You're welcome Also, if you choose to use Rod and Staff for English, HOD recommends you do 2/3 of each lesson orally or on a white board, leaving 1/3 for written work in a notebook-this way you cover the lesson in a shorter time, and the child is not overwhelmed with too much writing.

Re: Update/not finished with bigger
Preparing sounds like a good placement based on what you have shared. In Preparing, you would still read out loud to your student for Learning About History, Storytime, and Poetry, while he would be expected to read the Independent History and Science on his own-these are brief readings intended to ...

Re: DIOHR with Preparing quest.
For Preparing, you only need to do both the reading and the workbook assignments 3 days a week as scheduled in Preparing (and of course review any notes in the DITHOR teacher's guide). You will get through about 4 genres by the end of Preparing. With level 4/5, there are days when the student has to...

Re: DS12 is such a slow reader!
I have a slow reader in the house too. Someone on this board suggested a simple device called a see n read (you can google this) as a help, when I mentioned that she often loses her place while reading, and this is what slows her down. The see n read tool has made a difference for her; she said that...
