Re: Ummm...advice...DD5 in LHFHG reading Beyond's book set

Lisa and Lissie Jo, I was hoping for an answer like that. We do have two storytime sets, so I figure I'll either let her do the one she hadn't read yet, or we'll email Carrie, Mike, and Julie and ask for suggestions about what to do? She's been so hard to motivate, I'd hate to limit her on the one t...

Re: Ummm...advice...DD5 in LHFHG reading Beyond's book set

We did buy both the classic set & the girls' set. Maybe that was providential. I don't think she's picked up Trumpet of the Swansea yet.

Re: Ummm...advice...DD5 in LHFHG reading Beyond's book set

Laura, she was really reading them. We've done testing and "a quick check" and she's reading at a 4th grade level.

Meanwhile, she's right at a K level with handwriting and K-1 with math. Hence some of our struggle, along with maturity. She's definitely 5 maturity-wise.

Ummm...advice...DD5 in LHFHG reading Beyond's book set

Ok, I don't know if there's a prize for being all over the place this first year of homeschooling for us, but I feel like that girl. DD5 has had a really stretching year getting used to homeschooling, as has her mama. She is doing LHFHG half-speed, and is doing well with that. She's a young K, born ...

Re: Week In Review March 19-23

We did get done with LHFHG Unit 15. Love it; am not up on my blog. I am still feeling out our rhythm and with a toddler and cold winters, I find myself chasing me or him all day long. I hope I'll get current on blog posting. That is a goal. Hope you all had a great week!

Re: Yes, I too would like placement advice. :)

No worries, Stephanie! I just wanted to make sure you knew it was better to focus on placing your younger DD if you were going to combine them. It sounds like that agreed with the other advice you got, and I'm glad you settled on Beyond! Now the only question is making sure you tailor the 3R's for b...

Re: Another Placement Question

I agree with Lourdes, but for verification, would you please check the placement chart for both of your older ones to make sure? You just want to make sure that your now-5-year-old places predominantly into Beyond to make sure. Then you can select the appropriate math and readers to support both of ...

Re: Yes, I too would like placement advice. :)

I have been reflecting on your response to me, and how to deal with your surprise. You have two options and it sounds to me like you've picked one. Either you could run two guides for your older two or combine them to run one for them. It sounded to me like you'd rather combine them. If you are goin...

Re: Yes, I too would like placement advice. :)

Remember that it's not about ages, but abilities, so if your DD's match skill-wise into a certain guide, that is the one that is best suited for them. Remember that you can always tailor the phonics to match their abilities, but if you get the emerging readers you'd have to get the Beyond guide. I t...

Re: Yes, I too would like placement advice. :)

Stephanie, I don't know what other ladies, think, but there is a decent amount of copywork in Beyond. Might you consider LHFHG, using 2nd grade options for your older DD? That might give her more time to do some handwriting practice. If it takes a lot of work to get your 8 yo DD to write, then you m...

Re: HoD vs MFW

Julie's written a great comparison of the two curricula. I've only used HOD's LHTH and LHFHG, and haven't looked at MFW, although I considered using it.

Here's her thread.

Re: Help me think straight

Wow, this post is thought-provoking! My DD5 has a July birthday and I have considered her K. She's made noise lately of not wanting to do school and I think it's because I've pushed her. I have been considering just this week of pulling her back to LHTH and K options because what we've been doing ha...

Re: Need to fill in a year

I like Julie's ideas. There is a day once in a blue moon that, though we are smack dab in the middle of LHFHG, that I wonder what would happen if we switched back and just did the RH of LHFHG plus all of LHTH. It can not hurt to repeat the Bible stories, especially with slightly different Bibles. We...

Re: 2012 Conference Schedule is up!!

Still nowhere near us, but maybe next year. I'll keep handing out catalogs to friends in AZ and CA. lol, same here! I actually feel "free" from going to our state conference this next summer because HOD won't be there and there's nothing else I'm interested in looking at! I can relate to bot...
