Dictation Level 5 needed!!!
We have Preparing for my 5th grader and I think he may be very capable of doing the next level higher for dictation. How can I get a copy of this to see without having to buy CtC just yet? Or can I?

Re: I've made a mess of placement. Is there hope?
I would not fret, nor spend much time in regret. I'm curious why you are opposed to doing one in Bigger and the older in Preparing since that is really where they place? I understand the desire to combine, I really do, but if separating suits each best perhaps you can start to find joy in knowing yo...

Re: I've made a mess of placement. Is there hope?
oops...wasn't ready to hit submit... From the sounds of your younger son, I think Preparing would be WAY too difficult for him this year. One of the purposes of Preparing is to prepare them for CtC and the independence required in it. If your son is struggling with reading persay, I think the indepe...

Re: I've made a mess of placement. Is there hope?
Hi there! I just wanted to say that i totally understand where you are coming from. My boys are only 21 months apart and I always had them combined. But like the PP, this year I finally had to come to the realization (especially as the guides become harder and meatier) that I was doing an injustice ...

Re: High School half speed on the HISTORY side only?
I certainly have a few years before I need to worry about highschool but the thought that immediately came to my mind was his college plans. Regardless of what your state might require, if he has plans to go to college I would look at what the college would require for entrance. The state may not ne...

Add IEW in for 5th grader doing Preparing
My 5th grader will be doing Preparing as I think he needs the year of really getting his narrations down before CtC. We did IEW US History based writing for the first half of the year last year. We stopped because he went to a private school in January. Since Preparing's writing is primarily thru wr...

Same guide back to back
All of a sudden I'm starting to doubt my decision to put my 9 year old in Bigger while my 10 year old (almost 11) does Preparing. I'm nervous about doing Preparing back to back since next year he will be ready for that one. Has anyone else done a guide like this two years in a row with different chi...

Re: Cursive Question (for Julie and others)
I agree with the PP. I am old school in that I still think the written word (esp. cursive) needs to be taught, learned and practiced. However, that's not to say that the length of some of the copy work in Preparing needs to all be done in cursive. I think if it is truly a difficult act for him, that...

Re: Question about note taking and test taking
I would also think since dictation is scheduled throughout that THAT is a key component to building your child's ability to take notes....listening to what the professor says, and then being able to remember it, and then write it down. Dictation builds in it's length year after year! And yes, I woul...

Re: Preparing Placement ?
8 "seems" very young for Preparing, especially with where they are in writing. The writing portion of Preparing has nothing to do with what LA you do either. There is ALOT of writing (some cursive, some print) everyday with either science, history written narrations, poetry, dictation, copywork, etc...

Re: Didn't finish BHFHG, now what?
First of all...don't fret. They are all still so young...you haven't ruined them yet! :). Sounds like you made positive strides in your year, if nothing else (and most importantly thru spiritual and character growth!) Secondly. Have you looked at where each of your children fit on the placement char...

Re: R&S English 4 in Preparing vs. CTC
Yes, that is correct.
If you are on the lower end of the age for CTC then you could only be in R&S4 by then and you would complete half during that year, and the other half in RTR. Then you would go at full pace of completing one guide that year the following year.
