Re: written narr. with dyslexia/dysgraphia
We aren't in Preparing quite yet (finishing up Bigger), but what I was planning to do with my dysgraphic/dyslexic son is have him dictate his narration to me, edit with my help on what I have transcribed, and then copy with the corrections onto his own paper. I feel like this will be good enough to ...

Placement help please? Returning to HOD
I can't believe I'm asking for placement help, but here we are. :) We started out with LHFHG with my oldest many, many moons ago. She did LHFHG, Beyond, Bigger, Preparing, and CTC. Life, babies, therapy, and a cross country move happened (well 2 moves in a 6 week time span), and then a car accident,...

Re: To combine or not combine?
Thank you ladies for the reassurance. I think that's what we are going to do. Combine both 8 and 10 year old in preparing. With me being a working mom , if I try to do different guides for everyone it's just not feasible. Plus my daughter will be starting K next year, so she will take a good amount...

Re: Everyone wants to join in Bigger Hearts!
That's so great! My kids who aren't in Bigger usually want to join in too. I think it's so much fun.

Re: To combine or not combine?
I think that combining them in Preparing sounds great. My 3rd child will be 8 when we start Preparing--I don't see a problem with that at all. I also am a working mom and completely understand how helpful combining is. My oldest is completely independent now, and my middle two are combined in Bigger...

Use highlighter tape for highlighting/underlining. It's amazing stuff. I use it for piano lessons a lot. You can get it at teacher supply stores.

Re: Extension Package for Bigger as Read Aloud
When my oldest was in Bigger, we did at least 2 of the recommended books for each genre, and often all 3. With my next two who are currently in Bigger, we are doing just one story time package (well, we are just doing books that looked interesting to both since we already had most of them, but just ...

Re: Praise for HOD and encouragement for those w/ dyslexic k
We have found the same thing to be true--that HOD is just so wonderful for kids with dyslexia. Or our son, anyway. :) I had actually taken some time off of HOD because I just thought we needed to focus on the "3 Rs" for right now to get our son reading. I just was so worried about him learning to re...

Re: Average Mom
I've learned so much with the guides and through teaching my children, and I do have a college degree (music education)! All the guides include everything you need to teach them, truly. And then, as noted, the guides become more and more independent as they go. We just started CTC and my daughter is...

Re: Required State history??
It's not required in my state but important to both myself and my husband, so we have just woven in our state history by reading books to our kids about the state history, symbols, motto, etc. and taking them to important historical places or landmarks in our state. That might be something to consid...

Re: Using a different Language Arts than what is recommended
We're currently finishing out the CLE workbooks we already had, but we're about to switch back to R&S. CLE worked well for us while we were doing something other than HOD, but now that we're back, I just think we need to switch back to R&S. Yes, it is possible to use your own program, but I truly th...

Re: Starting to Stress
I'm running 3 guides this year--1 kiddo in CTC with the extensions, 2 in Bigger (but the oldest is doing the extensions with me reading them out loud), and 1 in LHTH. The one in CTC is more or less independent. We've only been going now for 3 days, and haven't added in our "extras" yet (Spanish, Lat...

Re: Getting Ready to Start up again
We started Monday! We consider ourselves year 'round schoolers, but we took off longer than normal this summer for a variety of reasons, trips, camps and such. So we've been off 7 weeks. We'll school 6-8 weeks on, 1 off throughout the year, with a longer break at Christmas. :) This is also our first...

Re: Emerging Readers to DITHOR
I prefer to do different genres with story time and DITHOR. I know others who like to do the same. I just like different because when the genre comes up again in the opposite (so like we did Biography already in story time and it's coming up again in DITHOR), I feel like it sort of reinforces that i...

Re: DITHOR Questions
I've used DITHOR for the better part of (I think?) 3 years, and we've never used the book projects book. I'm actually getting it for this year to give us some new projects to choose from, but it's certainly not essential. There are 2 projects scheduled for each genre in addition to the one from the ...
