Re: Homeschooling Activities & Finding the Right Balance
From what it sounds like, you may have been like me. When I heard the list of questions to ask, I thought to myself "well, we DO have those priorities, and our activities don't really sabotage the things that are really important." The concept of margin has been pretty important to me also. I can't ...

Considering skipping LHTH for the first time - boy child!
Well, I have one son and now he is 4. My intention last year was to start him on LHTH this year and take it slow, taking probably more than a year to finish it. He is a very smart boy but has vision problems and only just recently was at all interested in any fine motor skills practice. He would do ...

Re: multiple guides.... how to schedule?
I do similarly to Lora Beth. Finish the youngest while the older ones work on something else independently (LHFHG doesn't really have any independent things, but that one could play, listen to an audio book, etc). Then work with one of the older ones, then work with the other older one. I will say, ...

Re: Socialization Trap Book ~ Long ~ If you homeschool witho
This is always a good topic to revisit. I think in your post, you kind of indicate your own feelings of being overwhelmed and too busy, of feeling like you don't get enough time at home with your kids. I think those feelings, while they shouldn't always be the primary driver of your decisions, are d...

Re: Desks in bedrooms?
Like Daneale, I have had problems with my kids getting even more distracted and not doing their work if they are off somewhere where I cannot see them. It is nice for them to be somewhere where there are no distractions, but in reality there are distractions everywhere. I would say it would work for...

Re: Placement for Stair Step Children
I would second a lot of what Stephanie said. First of all I recommend you don't try to get LHTH done in one year. Do it 3 days a week or so and let it take up to 2 years to complete. As your oldest is ready for more math, or handwriting, or learning to read, just add that in for that one, letting th...

Re: DITHOR-3 days in 1 day?
I'm sure you could make it work, but that does seem like an awful lot of DITHOR to do in one day. First, the readings are divided out to be smaller, more managable chunks to help the child digest the reading more slowly. It would be confusing (I think) to do 3 different DITHOR activities/workbook pa...

Re: Starting our first year soon, and suddenly panicking!
I really like having a routine set out for our days. It's not a strict schedule where we have to start at a certain time, but rather an order we like to do things in. I've been where you're at. Here's how I go about making my schedule (because I don't think someone else's schedule can really tell yo...

Re: Bigger/DITHOR Question
That seems like a good strategy to start with, but DITHOR is great so add it in once you get in a good rhythm - probably 3-4 units. You will love it!

Re: Is WWTB really vital to prepare for Medieval Writing Les
I haven't seen IYW so I don't know what that is like. But I do think you could go into IEW from various different programs, because it felt kind of like a "start over" for us. My daughter likes IEW better because it lays out rules a little more specifically and WWTB was a lot more open-ended on what...

Re: Help! I've got to change something, but what?
I could agree with Gwenny except for what you shared about your ODS taking forever to do his work and really not diligently getting it done. I would work on this as much as possible before you even make a decision. I guess what you need to know is: is it too much work, or is he just balking because ...

Re: Do we need Storytime and DITHOR?
We do both because it's our favorite thing to do, read together. If I were to drop one it would be Storytime. I often don't do the discussion with Storytime. I think the discussion with the talk about story elements and such is more important to make sure you complete BEFORE they start doing DITHOR ...

Re: The gap between LHTH and LHFHG
Welcome to this board. It is so fun to hear about people starting on their homeschool journey. There is just so much to figure out! I think it's especially interesting with our first born children, because they are the trailblazer and you start working through all of the issues. I agree with Julie. ...

Re: Summer schooling?
I was supposed to be doing summer schooling but it has been going slowly due to other commitments - swimming lessons, VBS, a trip with my in-laws. July is a lot more empty on the calendar so I think we will get more done once July starts. But we want to take opportunities to help people and spend ti...

Re: Which subjects are covered in LHFHG and Bigger?
If you wanted to do that you would just use the boxes, with the one that changes daily being the "rotating box." Under LA in the higher guides there are typically at least 2 activities each day but sometimes they change (especially in Preparing on up). I personally like using the guide itself as my ...
