As if needed, ANOTHER reason to love HOD!
If you haven't educated yourself about the horrors of Common Core in the public schools, you really need to do so. We, in the homeschooling community, can't live in a bubble (as much I would love to most days). The unbelievable infiltration of Islam into our public schools is frightening. As I was c...

Re: dyslexia and HOD high school
The program is called Natural Reader. In order to get the scanning capability, you'd have to order the ultimate package. There is a free download to try it, but I think that natural, realistic voices make are better.

Re: dyslexia and HOD high school
My severely dyslexic ds is not as far along as yours. He's in 7th grade this year using Rev. to Rev. However, I am also very nervous about high school. As of now, I still read aloud all the content areas. There is no way he could read all that on his own and keep the pace up. I think the key is to g...

Re: HELP! I'm SCARED to open the BOX!
Deep breath! Just because it says "I" doesn't mean it has to be that way with YOUR kids from day one! With my severely dyslexic ds, CTC was completely teacher-led the whole year, and he's doing more and more independently now that we are in Rev. to Rev. It will come. Maybe choose an "easier" indepen...

Re: Letter Help, Again Please
My ds was diagnosed as a severe dyslexic when he was 9. I did not want an IEP or the district's involvement. We paid for a private screening by a trained specialist. This site is fabulous. It provides a lot of information and a checklist. We found a Barton tester who was local. It was a little expen...

WONDERFUL! I remember you from when you used HOD a few years ago. Your new little one is just beautiful, and big brother looks so happy. Enjoy

Re: Creating Exams for High School guides
Are there any guidelines as to the type of exam you must give? If it can be an essay format, I would just create a rubric for her written narrations and use those scores.

Re: DITHOR vs Rev2Rev Storytime for High School Literature?
I will be in your situation in a couple of years too. How severe is your ds's dyslexia? Would it be possible to find lower-level books that he could read independently or audio books that he could use for DITHOR? That way, you would only be reading the history books to him. That is what I will be do...

Re: Am I stressed out over nothing?
I would not worry, BUT I would keep a close watch on things. My ds was finally diagnosed with severe dyslexia when he was 9. Looking back, I wished that I would have realized what was going on earlier so that intervention could begin much earlier than it did. Now that I know so much about dyslexia, ...

Re: Guilt about using HOD and not planning my own
I think we need to remember that we don't need to all be little "Charlotte Masons" by reinventing the "wheel" in our homeschools. Charlotte's teachers and parents used her curriculum. They didn't all go out and design their own curricula. We should never feel like we are somehow "selling out" becaus...

Re: Question on setting up RtoR
Most of the teacher maps are used. I think you'd have very little waste by printing them all. I printed the post cards as we went because sometimes which particular card was best, with how many boxes there were, space for a diagram, etc. would depend on the assignment. Sometimes you use both, and so...

Re: Spelling Help
How is his reading? Abysmally poor spelling can be a significant sign for dyslexia. That may be something to investigate. However, I would encourage him to write DESPITE his spelling. Spelling is no one's master! Spelling is a useful servant, and composition should never wait for it. My severely dys...

There is a home educator's guide that I found helpful in the upper levels. It's worth the small price tag imho.

Re: Hsing special needs with HOD
I'm in total agreement with you! HOD has been phenomenal for my severely dyslexic ds! Who would have thought that a literature-heavy program would be just what the dyslexic ordered? Thanks for the encouragement.
