Re: Let's share our schedules!

daybreaking,

I can't believe that I didn't post my schedule for 2012-2013! :D I don't know how I missed posting it. Luckily, I still have the schedule, so I'll post it here in the hopes that it will help some of you! :D

I'll just share that I try hard to stick to the start, end, breakfast, lunch, and recess times routinely in our days. The other time increments I view as guidelines that fluctuate, however those guidelines do help me know if I am lagging way behind in my day. So, for me the times listed really help keep me moving forward on track. :D

If I see a child (or multiple kiddos) are falling way behind in their day, I jump in and help them catch up. To do this, I might do all of an English lesson orally, assigning none to be done on paper. Or, I may write out the math problems from the textbook to help the child move more quickly. I might downsize a math assignment a bit if needed. Or, I might put away or set out a child's materials open to needed pages to move him along. I may write a younger child's answers to DITHR, while he dictates them to me to save time. Or, I might sit right by a child pointing out text or redirecting while he works to keep him on task. I might read directions aloud from an older child's guide while he follows them, or I might send the kiddos for a much needed break while I quickly check their work to see why they might have fallen behind. Anyway, these are just a few ideas of how you can partner with your kiddos to keep them on track and happily moving through their day. :D

Below find our schedules for the 2012-2013 school year. Cole was in his junior year of high school, piloting much of our high school plans for the new high school guides. Shaw was doing MTMM. Greyson was doing Preparing. Beau was doing LHFHG. All of the boys finished their guides by the end of the school year, except Beau who continued to finish his remaining 4 weeks of LHFHG at the beginning of the next school year. :D

The approximate times for the various subjects are in parentheses. I also designate for my younger kiddos in which room they need to do each subject. These room designations are also listed in parentheses. For my older kiddos, I only designate a room if they must be in that area at that specific time. Otherwise, they are free to choose where to do their work, as they have proven to be responsible. :D Times the kiddos meet with the teacher are noted in bold. As you can see from the schedule below, I had groups of times where I was overseeing two kiddos (or more at once) with varying subjects. It was a bit chaotic at times, but it did work! :D I needed to have a break built into my schedule mid-afternoon form 1:30-3:30 for work, so this is why the schedule looks the way it does! :D

Re: Let's share our schedules!

Ladies,

I somehow didn't realize I hadn't posted my schedule for the 2011-2012 school year until I was ready to start this school year! We did use our 2011-2012 schedule all year with good luck, so I'll post it now. :D

Rather than being a strict time-keeper, I follow the same routine or flow to each day. That way my boys know the order in which to do things and what comes next, without having to ask me all throughout the day. :D So, even if you are not a particularly scheduled person, I'd encourage you to have a set order or routine that you follow. :D I'll repost some of my same comments from my previous schedule, as we still follow these same ideas, so they're worth repeating.

We have found that our start time is very important each day and that the next most important thing is keeping the same flow or routine to the day. For my oldest two sons, I made sure to schedule independent tasks last in their day. In that way, if my oldest two get up early or get ahead of schedule, they can simply jump to the end of their schedule and do one of their independent subjects. My boys love this, as they feel they are chipping off their ending time by doing these subjects earlier in the day. :D

In order for my day to flow well, I don't necessarily have to be on the exact times it says on my schedule (and often I am not ), but I do need to have each of my kiddo's time with me in the same order each day. This keeps my routine very similar and makes me able to calmly move on to what is next. My boys know that when I call them to do any items scheduled with me that it takes precedence over whatever they are doing. This is because there is only 1 of me and 4 of them! :)

I give each child his own schedule, and I keep a copy of these individual schedules in plastic page protectors on a ring on my fridge so that I can easily check at any given time who is supposed to be doing what (and where). I have a one-page schedule for me that includes only the items I am to be doing with my children in the teaching capacity or the maintenance capacity. This keeps my notes to a minimum and shows me at a glance what I'm supposed to be doing. The kiddos each have a copy of only their own schedule in a 3-ring folder in a plastic page protector for them to check off each day with a dry erase marker. We use the same routine every day, which really helps the kiddos memorize it. :D

Here are my boys' schedules for 2011-2012. The items in blue are the ones that are done specifically with me each day. I have not put mealtimes in blue, nor all of the overseeing I do as I move kiddos from task to task, but my teaching times are noted in blue. This way you can see how it works for one teacher to teach multiple programs. We do eat lunch and dinner together as a family, but our breakfast is in two shifts with the olders eating as they get up and the youngers getting up later and eating later. This allows for the olders to have some quiet work time before the youngers descend upon us for the day. :D

Don't let this detailed schedule scare you, as it is honestly the order and routine (not the times) that keep us steadily progressing forward each day. Although you may never get to the point where you are doing 4 separate programs, I just wanted to let you know that it can be done and is manageable. You may never have the need to finish as early in the day as I do so that I have time to work, but if you do I also wanted to let you know that is possible. So keep that in mind as you read further. Rest assured that this is just one way among many, and HOD is flexible enough that families are able to make the same guides work in a completely different order and manner to find what is best for them. :D

Note: Typically, Cole gets up on his own by 6:00 or 6:30 A.M. So, he does his Bible Study and often his literature study before breakfast. In this way, he is done earlier like the other boys. I also do much of my discussing with Cole after our lunch recess, in the afternoons, and early in the evening. :D

In all honesty, out of necessity I have gotten more scheduled as the years have gone by, due to needing to have work time for ME in the afternoons. I work hard with schooling until 1:00, but this truly leaves my time free from teaching after that! This is such a huge blessing to me, so I am willing to work harder to stay on task and keep interruptions at bay in the morning to have my afternoons for my much needed worktime and for maintaining my home! I also have to say that I am truly feeling blessed this year, as my two oldest sons are very independent, allowing me time to work with my younger two during school. I enjoy the things that I still do with my oldest sons, but I am also enjoying time spent focused on my younger ones. I can see the fruits of years spent in training my older sons in so many areas. They are truly becoming young men! :D

Re: Let's share our schedules!

Ladies,

I am finally getting around to posting our schedules for 2009-2010. I always shy away from posting my schedule, as I know each person is different and what works for one family may not work for another. On the other hand, I know it can be helpful to see other family's schedules, so I will post my schedule for this year with that thought in mind.

At our house, I find I function better having each child have his own schedule written out separately. It is easier for me to make changes this way, without affecting everyone, and also easier for each child to see what he needs to do each day. Each child has his own schedule in a binder with a plastic page protector. He checks off each item as it's done each day. The kiddos keep their same schedule all year, after we've made a few initial adjustments. In this way, they learn the schedule by heart (and so do I). :D

I am trying something new this year by NOT taking a morning recess break and by starting my older boys earlier (starting at 7:30 A.M. to get ready for the day) in order to have more of our afternoon free. I must admit that my husband (who is an early riser) makes sure the older kids are up and going before he leaves for the day. This has helped me tremendously! I will also admit that in this schedule I do try very hard not to do anything but school during the scheduled school-time. The added benefit of this is that we are actually finishing very near lunchtime (at 1:10 or so) each day (and have from the beginning of the school year).

I also made a point of scheduling last in the day anything the kiddos could do independently earlier in the day if they happened to finish a scheduled subject early. In this way, the older boys have the added motivation to finish a subject early and "work ahead" on their after lunch tasks.

The schedule below is for 2009-2010. It includes Beau (age 3, doing Little Hands to Heaven half-time), Greyson (just turned 7, in 1st grade, doing Beyond Little Hearts at full-speed 4 days a week), Shaw (age 10, in 5th grade, doing Creation to Christ at full-speed), Cole (age 13, in 8th grade, piloting much of Resurrection to Reformation at full-speed).

2008-2009 Shaw Grade 5 "Creation to Christ" Schedule:
7:30-8:00 Make Bed/Groom/Dress/Pick up Room/Breakfast
8:00-8:30 Creation to Christ Reading About History box (morning room)
8:30-8:50 Creation to Christ Independent History Study box (in morning room)
8:50-9:00 Chores: Take out garbages, put away silverware, wipe high chair tray, dust bust kitchen rug/floor.
9:00-9:10 Dictation
9:10-9:30 Creation to Christ Genesis: Finding Our Roots/Geography of Bible Lands (with mom at kitchen table)

2:45-3:00 Looking at books
3:00-5:00 Nap

I make a master schedule for me that is one sheet and only has on it those things that I must teach or oversee during the school day. I put this in a plastic page protector along with the boys’ individual schedules behind it. That way I can see at a quick glance what I should be doing and also what each individual child should be doing.

My Schedule:
7:30-8:00 Mike makes sure older boys are up and going
8:00-8:30 I make sure Greyson and Beau are up and going.
8:30-8:35 Dictation with Cole at kitchen table
8:35-8:55 Grammar with Cole at kitchen table

10:40 Write with the Best/Grammar at kitchen counter with Shaw (oversee Beau)
11:00 Put Beau in crib with toys
11:05 Medieval History-Based Writing with Cole (morning room)
11:30 School with Greyson in morning room
1:00-1:10 Help make lunch
1:10-1:45 Lunch/Read-aloud
1:45-2:15 Watch over Beau and check work
2:15-3:15 Recess

Once I make a schedule, we work it every day until it becomes routine. The kiddos have timers for some subjects and generally watch the clock for the others. While I am not always on-time, I do keep the same order for each child every day. I have honestly found that to be the single most important thing schedule-wise that we do in our homeschool. If I am constantly changing my schedule, then my kiddos will never know what to expect, and I'll never hit the point at which the schedule really gives me freedom (because everyone knows what they're doing every day). Even if you don't like time allotments, just keeping the same general order of subjects every day will make a HUGE difference. :D

Re: Let's share our schedules!

Terri - This portion of Carrie's post describes what we do quite well...
Carrie wrote: So, for example, I would work with Greyson at the table on his handwriting (or his Rod and Staff workbooks or his math), while Shaw is nearby at the counter working on his math, and Beau is at the table with one of his quiet Lakeshore toys from the cupboard. We all talk very quietly, and I usually sit at the table, popping up to check on Shaw at the counter as needed. At the same time, Cole would be in a different room, working on one of his more independent tasks, but definitely in a room where the toddler can't get to him to continually interrrupt him (should he choose to leave the table where I am).

We do something very similar to this. I have tried to look at our house and carve out some separate places for learning. W e use our dining room table in our dining room, our kitchen table in our kitchen, and a desk in our entryway. Having places in different rooms that are yet easy for me to float between has worked well. We have several art caddies that are mobile and have one on each table/desk. This cuts down on the running around for supplies. This kind of floating between type time is good for things that are semi-independent. I try to start one child on something, then float to the next area and start the next child on something, and move back and forth between them. This is a good time for our toddler to be at one of the tables (usually the kitchen table) with some of his Lakeshore things. I get him started on something as well and then float between them. I sound like a hovercraft, don't I? Maybe float is the wrong word. Anyway, you get the drift. I do this for things like: math, notebooking, projects - more table time type things.

I had DITHOR toward the end of the schedule last year. This did not work well for us, as we were not fresh and often rushed through parts of it. I love DITHOR and didn't like the way that made it go, so I put it much earlier in the schedule this year. Grammar, subjects I am reading to the child, Bible/devotional type things, and phonics instruction are times I consider key teaching times that deserve full attention with as quiet and private of an atmosphere as possible. I try to do these types of things alone with a child while the other child is playing in the playroom with a gate with the toddler, or when the toddler is watching his video in the entryway (we put a T.V./V.C.R. in the top of the closet, and got him a special little chair to sit in with a blankie and teddy bear to watch - he loves this - and I love that he's safe and gated off in an area far enough from us I can check on him but he doesn't interrupt us). I also try to do these subjects earlier in the day. For the toddler, I make sure to have a time with him (15 minutes) first shot out of the barrel. He's a little young for LHTH, so I'm starting the year with singing Bible songs, doing a few Lakeshore activities, a puzzle, etc. We do this at the desk in the entryway while the older boys are finishing breakfast. I also put in a 15 minute time for him in the later morning, basically just to get him going at the table while I'm floating between other teaching things.

I schedule the more independent things my older ds to do at the end of the day. He likes control of this, and I like that I can get to other responsibilities I have like making lunch, doing laundry - you know what I'm talking about here - the "to do" list. At this point, my Beyond child is done with school and can play with toddler.

As far as schedules go, I've found it is incredibly important to consider what time wasters are in my day naturally and cut down on those. For me, this used to be talking on the phone, checking my email/HOD board, and cooking during the school day. I quit answering the phone before lunch, hold off checking my email or getting on the board until after lunch unless I'm up early, and made a very simple 2 week rotating lunch plan. This was a huge help to the day. The other kind of outside thing to consider is how best to use the space in your house. The entryway was never designed to be a school area or a T.V./V.C.R. living room type area, but it's the best use of that space right now. So, looking at the space you have and using it as wisely for your day to day needs as possible is well worth the time. One other thing that has totally helped our day is using the timer and following the same order of boxes/routine each day. This causes time to continue to drop off the schedule as the year progresses.

I hope some of these ideas can help, Terri! :) I think you are wise to think through this and make a plan before beginning. This reflecting process and thoughtful creation of the school schedule each year is about the only "prep" time I have for HOD. I figure it's well worth my time at the start because then I reap the benefits of that careful planning the whole rest of the year as we coast. :D

Julie

Re: Let's share our schedules!

Terri,

I will say that at our house we tried have a round table type time where everybody worked on a similar subject (like math), each on their own level and I jumped around to whomever needed me. For me that didn't work well, as there were too many kiddos who needed me at the same time, and my constant talking to one child or another distracted the others. So, for us, we've found that I can work quite well with two kiddos in fairly close proximity both working on either a similar subject or two different subjects, where they need me. It's helps if one child is older and one younger. I can also still manage a toddler at the table too during this time, as long as the little guy is fairly quiet.

So, for example, I would work with Greyson at the table on his handwriting (or his Rod and Staff workbooks or his math), while Shaw is nearby at the counter working on his math, and Beau is at the table with one of his quiet Lakeshore toys from the cupboard.

I've also found I can have two kiddos at the counter on stools, doing spelling or dictation with one, while overseeing grammar with the other at a similar time. It doesn't work to be doing two grammars at once though. :D I do try to get the older kiddos math and DITHR out of the way before morning recess. I find that I can easily do phonics and math with my beginning readers (K-1st grade) after lunch if needed without it being very taxing.

As far as your older daughter goes, I'd schedule some of her more independent subjects after lunch, allowing her to do her science then. I'd also try to schedule a 30 minute chunk of time before lunch with just your oldest, to do dictation first (5 min.), then poetry (5-10 min. except on creative writing days, which then the poetry lesson should be done in place of DITHR in that time slot), then Bible (5-10 min.), and end with going over grammar (10 min.), and assign a portion of grammar to do on paper independently at the end for 15 min. or so beyond the 30 min. time slot. :D

Re: Let's share our schedules!

Good morning, Terri - I don't know if you got my list I PM'd you, but in case you didn't (and in case anyone else is interested), here it is :D :

Hi Terri! Here are some of the Lakeshore things I've used with my little guy. I found it a lot easier to look at the catalog than the website when choosing. Every child is different in what makes him tick. It's been interesting to watch which ones Carrie's toddler Beau loves, compared to which ones my little Emmett loves. Have fun shopping with your little one in mind!

Feed the animals fine motor games
Feed the farm fine-motor games
Lakeshore counting cakes
Tub of cars and trucks
Match a bug Activity Center
Cookies on a plate counting game (or any of the Fun to Count Games set - some were too little
for my 2 yo who was prone to put things in his mouth yet, so we started with the
Cookies on a plate)
Easy Grip Jumbo pegs and pegboard
Shape sorter
Giant Chubby Pegboard Set
My First Pegboard Set
No-Fail Lacing Set (when closer to 3 yo)
Animal and Insect Tubs

In Christ,
Julie

There are many other Lakeshore boxes for 3 yo's on up too, but these are the things my 2 yo liked. :D

Re: Let's share our schedules!

I agree that we have also used Lakeshore toys for years with our boys. They are incredibly durable and each comes with its own box for storage. If you can purchase them at a local teacher store, you'll save a ton on shipping. Lakeshore charges a huge shipping and handling fee and tax too! If you can combine an order with another mom, you'll do better with shipping.

Beau is a gatherer, so he loves objects of any kind in a lidded container. The lidded container is for MY sanity. We cleared out a bottom cupboard in the kitchen for the toddler which contains his toys. He must put away one mess before getting out another one.

Beau has also enjoyed blocks in a plastic container with a lid, foam letters in a lidded tub, plastic bug counters in a lidded container, unifix cubes he can snap together and take apart, a markerboard with a variety of low odor dry erase markers, plastic easter eggs which can be put together sometimes with a cheerio or other object in them (we store them in a drawstring bag), a cheerio book to place cheerios on the insets in the pages, a variety of counters (such as rubber apples, fish, and ladybugs each in its own lidded container), and paper taped to the highchair tray with washable markers. In all honesty, Beau loved to get out the container, take off the lid and dump, count, arrange the objects. Then, he'll pick them up (with help from me) and get out a new set. This keeps him busy for quite awhile, and he goes to his cupboard all throughout the day. :D

During his crib time, he has loved a big set of Mega Blocks and an oversized magnetic rods and balls set. That just happens to be his personality though. He also has a plastic cash register with large coins and a singing Barney which he adores. A "Learn Through Music" sing along toy with touch screen and large "cassettes" you slide into the player has been a favorite of my last two boys. Different "cassettes" can be purchased to play in the player. Wooden blocks in a wooden tray is another favorite. He has a stuffed dolphin that he borrows from his oldest brother as his favorite stuffed toy. :D

I'm not sure if that helps at all.

Carrie

I give each kiddo a copy of their schedule that is written the way you see it above with check boxes added next to each item). I put each child's schedule/list in a plastic page protector in a 3-ring binder, so each child has their own. I give each kiddo a dry-erase marker to check off the boxes each day. I do not make a master schedule for me, as I find that overwhelming for me. I just put these lists in plastic page protectors all together on a ring and hang them on the fridge for me or my hubby to refer to as needed. By having each child listed separately, it's easy to see exactly what that child is needing to do when. It also takes me much less time to make a schedule this way!

Re: Let's share our schedules!

I am finally going to get to this, but remember this is what worked for me and your approach to scheduling may vary MUCH from mine, which is fine! We designed HOD to work for any family, which is why I don't put a schedule in the guide. Each family has to find their own way that works best with the HOD daily plans. Also, the schedule often changes from year to year, as the needs change within my homeschool. So, I'm going to post last year's schedule when we did Bigger Hearts for grade 3 and LHFHG at half-speed for my 5 year old. I'll also post my then 6th grader's schedule, so you can see how he fit in the mix. Then, I'll post my this year's schedule with LHFHG full-speed and Preparing Hearts. So, here goes.

Our kiddos eat breakfast at 8:30, must be dressed/groomed, have rooms picked up and beds made and be down to start school by 9:10. The 5-6 year old, goes back upstairs to play for an extra hour after eating/grooming at 9:10 to play until 10:10. This keeps the house quiet for the older boys quiet time and harder subjects which are scheduled first. I work very hard to stay on schedule in the morning and to start on time (which makes a HUGE difference in our day). I am very guilty of letting the kiddos play too long at recess (which I love to do) but then having to work a little later in the day to compensate (which the boys do not love)! So, my schedules always reflect me working hard to teach a lot in the morning, leaving the kiddo's more independent subjects for after lunch! 8)

2007-2008 Shaw Grade 3 "Bigger Hearts..." Schedule
9:10-9:30 Quiet Time: Read one Bible story. Do one page of Greek. Do one page of Cheerful Cursive. (in morning room)
9:30-9:45 Chores: Take out garbages, put away silverware, wipe baby's tray, dust bust kitchen rug/floor.
9:45-10:05 Level 2/3 Drawn into the Heart of Reading (with mom at the kitchen table)
10:05-10:25 Math (with mom at the kitchen counter)
10:25-11:00 Bigger Hearts Reading About History box, Bible Study box, and bottom left activity box (with mom in morning room)
11:00-11:35 Computer CD (from among my pre-selected choices)
11:35-12:20 Recess (everyone outside unless it's raining)
12:20-12:50 Bigger Hearts Grammar, dictation, poetry (with mom in morning room)
12:50-1:15 Lunch (Sing hymn prior to eating and mom reads aloud Storytime box at lunch) Chores: Clear table after lunch.
1:15-1:35 Bigger Hearts Science (at kitchen counter)
1:35-2:05 Play with Greyson (educational games from cupboard)
2:05-2:35 (at kitchen table with mom and other boys) Mon.: Poetry, Tues.: Art Appreciation, Wed.: Color the Classics, Thurs.: Nature Journal

2007-2008 Greyson's Pre-K/beginning K Schedule for "Little Hearts...." at half-speed
9:10-10:10 Play in his room
