Skills taught in Preparing in order to be ready for CTC
Hi Everyone, I am doing the left page portion of Bigger w/ storytime, this year with my two dc. We are using a comparable different L.A. and math. After this year, my dd will have already been through the history rotation. Instead of going into Preparing and doing an overview, I would like to move h...

Re: Bible Handbooks Question
What is the reading schedule for the Young Christian's Introduction to the Bible in Preparing? Do they read portions of it weekly? How is the reading broken up. The reason I'm asking is that we are doing the left side of Bigger + story time because we haven't had Am. History. We are probably going t...

Re: How to make Bigger more independent for an older child?
I don't have an answer for you, I'm interested in this, too. I have a 5th grader who can be very independent. The only reason I chose Bigger is because both dc have been in a christian school that uses Veritas Press. They haven't had American History yet, and Preparing looked like it only covered mo...

Bible Handbooks Question
What is the difference between The Young Christian's Introduction to the Bible used in Preparing and a Bible Handbook like What the Bible is All About for Young Explorers by Henrietta Mears? Are they similar? Also, what are your reasons for choosing the Young Christian's Intro. to the Bible? I can't...

Re: Bummed out
Can you take the hard drive to a computer specialist? I bet there is a way to retrieve your information. It might be worth the cost to not have to do all that research all over again. My dad's computer crashed a couple years ago, and he was able to retrieve almost everything. It's something to think...

Re: Best approach to teach worldview
It seems like most world view curricula are geared for the highschool years. But I heard John Stonestreet (I think is his name!) from Summit Ministries speak at a homeschool conference and I thought I heard him say that Summit Ministries had a worldview curricula for younger students that wo...

Re: Drawn into the Heart of Reading vs. other reading programs
Some good suggestions for improving reading fluency have been posted. What my husband did was record the text of a simple book (maybe dr. Seuss type) being read by an adult. The words are read at a pretty slow pace at first. The child is taught to track with their finger following along with the re...

Re: Drawn into the Heart of Reading vs. other reading programs
As far as the stuttering around when reading...my husband just completed a 2 year research project on improving reading fluency in children! Reading the same text over and over while underscoring word with their finger will improve their speed in words per minute and will transfer to other texts as...

Re: Carrie, how do you implement handiwork in your homeschool?
I posted earlier, but it didn't seem to post. I've seen your posts on Keepers of the Faith and SOW yahoo group. I also accidentally hijacked a thread of yours on the Well Trained Mind board about SOW. I was going to tell you that I am not even including handiwork as a school subject, but am going to...

Re: I'm looking for a children's Bible (kind of OT)
The ESV Children's Bible is hands down my favorite Children's Bible. It has so many beautiful pictures mixed in with the full ESV text.

Julie, Well box day won't be until June, unfortunately. But, I will let you all know when box day draws near  BTW, after some prayer and advice from Carrie and an couple ladies on another thread of mine, I've decided to go with Bigger. I makes sense to ease into school to give ds more confidenc...

Re: Need Help Deciding Between Bigger and Preparing
Carrie, thanks for your wealth of wisdom!!!! I think, from the advice I have gotten from you and the other ladies, I'd be foolish to go ahead with Preparing. Although, both kids and I really were looking forward to doing that whole sweep of history, it does make more sense to ease into it and make s...

Re: Independent History in Preparing
Thanks MamaBear and Julie, you've given me some nuggets to chew on. Both dc are very excited to do world history, so I might just do as mamabear suggested and help him with the readings and gradually require a little more of him until he is doing them on his own. I'm really going to work with him fr...
