Specific Question about Pilgrims

I used HOD for many years. I remember reading that few pilgrim children died because the women would cover them with their bodies in the freezing temps. I'm pretty sure this came from one of our H OD books, but I can't remember which one. Does anybody know if I'm mistaken?

Re: Carrie - Mathhelp.com for Geometry

Thank you! Mathhelp.com looks really great. We are giving it a try for my oldest, who struggled with algebra. On a side note, I was reorganizing today, and I came across my oldest's notebooks and work from all of his years of HOD. WOW! I had been upset about his math struggles, and really focusing o...

Carrie - Mathhelp.com for Geometry

Carrie, you mentioned that your son used mathhelp.com for geometry in order to finish the course quickly. Can you share how long it took him to finish the entire course? Thanks.

Re: Thinking of combining 5th/7th grader into CtC & burnout

Hey there. I agree that Preparing is a great guide to start with, and is one that is very easy to combine. CTC is very difficult to combine. We tried to this year, and some of it is going fine, but there's is so much tweaking that is hasn't been worth it. If you want hod to work for your family, the...

Re: Hello, considering CTC

I think -3 could be a good fit, with extensions. You might ant to use a different language arts than what is scheduled, but the rest could easily be upgraded as needed. Geography is covered through how it relates to the history being studied. In CTC there are two days of geography each week, studyin...

Re: DITHOR--necessary?

We have always skipped DITHOR because I was crunched for time, and had to choose what to drop. I do hope to add it in, loosely, this year. At the very least, I want to read over the material and be able to use that in discussion with my children. I do think that it can lay a good foundation, and can...

Re: Choosing Phonics

I taught my first son to read with various programs - 100EZ lessons, Phonics Pathways, ETC. I finally settled on The Reading Lesson for my next three sons. I drew a lot on my previous experience with various curriculum as we went through TRL. Without that experience, I'm sure I would have gotten fru...

Re: Special 36 Hour Preview from Heart Of Dakota w/ Coupon C

I just want to share something AWESOME with all the mamas who will be ordering US History this year. My son will be doing dual-enrollment at a Christian college this year, instead of HOD. :( Because of HOD, he LOVES history. I was really concerned about him having to read dry textbooks. Anyway, the ...

Another PRAISE for HOD

Carrie, I just wanted to praise HOD one more time! My oldest son is a junior and has been using HOD since Preparing in the 4th grade. This year, for various reasons, we chose to transistion to dual-enrollment online at a Christian college. While I was excited about the opportunity, I was nervous abo...

Re: Optional assignments

Everything is optional. Lol. But, yes, if you are talking about credit, then the Living Library in the high school guides do not count toward credit. However, you have the freedom, as the teacher, to give credit where you deem necessary. You just need to do research into what constitutes a credit an...

Re: SAT Test prep

We've had a very hard time fitting it in. We bought the big blue book, but I think we'll just have to do a test prep class with the college or something. Look around, and you can probably find them. They run around $100-$150. We did something online, but it was seriously useless. We got it through H...

Re: Book of Centuries.....

My son never complained about it. And I never checked. Lol. However, I was curious, so I went back and looked at his. He did have to squish a lot into the first two pages of the BOC. He sort of overlapped the Ancient Native Americans over the Xia dyanasty picture. Then on the timeline, he had to ori...

Re: example of poor thinking skills

Give her a similar task today, nothing that is related to school or punishment. See if you can gauge whether she is being manipulative or truly has a problem with thinking skills. Some of it sounds like laziness and carelessness, however, before getting upset or frustrated with her, it would be wise...
