Re: Occupying the little ones...
Amy, Thanks so much for the link to the blog! She is full of great information! I can see I have some planning to do. We had started out well last year but I have gotten very slack in letting them just do whatever they want during our school time, which as you probably know, results in more fights, ...

Occupying the little ones...
I am working on my schedule for the upcoming year and I am planning on assigning time with each older child to play with the youngest one. I wanted to mix up their days so they don't have to do puzzles every day or read books every day. I wanted to mix in some learning videos so they are entertained...

Re: Would you ever repeat a guide?
Thank you, ladies! Julie, you were definitely clearer than mud! I am on board to homeschool for the long haul and I hear what you are saying that if I am tempted to give up, then adjustments may be necessary. I start to feel a little overwhelmed each time we face a new year and new guides. I am REAL...

Would you ever repeat a guide?
I have 4 kiddos and will eventually be doing 4 different guides. My oldest will be starting Preparing in the fall and my second will begin Beyond and then the third is doing LHTH. All 4 children are 2 years apart (currently 8, 6, 4, and 2) So very soon we will be doing 4 different guides, all 2 year...

Re: Question about note taking and test taking
Ladies, Thanks so much for the thoughts on this. I don't plan on doing anything other than HOD because I just love it and have seen so much growth in my children. Some days I think I enjoy school more than they do! Lynn and Julie, thanks so much for your detailed responses. Like I said previously, I...

Re: Question about note taking and test taking
I completely forgot about upcoming dictation. We will be starting them this coming year with Preparing, but I think you're probably right on that one. That would start to build the ability to take notes. Just curious how this all plays out later since most of the time we are not lecturing like a typ...

Question about note taking and test taking
Hi, ladies! I have a dear friend who does tutoring and teaching primarily for middle school and high school homeschooled children. I asked him what areas he felt were lacking in the education of the students he sees. He mentioned that most kids have a hard time taking notes and taking tests, even at...

I'm going to say Beyond, only because I haven't done Preparing yet, but I am REALLY looking forward to it next year. We have used LHTH, LHFHG, Beyond and Bigger.

Story Time for Beyond
Hi, ladies! I need some help here. My ds will be in Beyond next year for 1st grade. He is doing really well with LHFHG this year for Kindergarten, but is having a hard time with the story time where I ask him questions. I know some of that will come with time. My daughter used the classic books for ...

Re: US Geography
Thank you ladies and Carrie! It's funny! I just got to the lesson today where we start doing the 13 colonies with their abbreviations. Carrie, I just love your approach this! I am so thankful that we found this curriculum in the beginning (Kindergarten). I see so many moms struggling trying to figur...

Story Time for LHFHG
Hi, ladies! I have a problem and I need some help. My ds5 has completely stopped paying attention during our story time. We are almost mid-way through the year and he started this about 2 weeks ago. I have to read something to him 2-3 times before he can answer simple questions about what I read. On...

US Geography
Ladies, I am struggling with that nagging feeling of not doing what EVERYONE else is doing! My dd8 is in Bigger this year. I am hearing from other parents how their children her age younger are memorizing all the states and capitols. I really haven't added much to HOD. This is our 3rd year using HOD...

Re: Phonics Question
Christine, I have Alphaphonics and I started using that in the beginning when she was in her PreK year. She was moving through it quickly and I was using ETC as a supplement. But trying to go back and forth between the two programs made me crazy. And Alphaphonics is not very exciting to look at so I...
