The True Story of Noah's Ark, CD (Preparing)
I was wondering if the CD from The True Story of Noah's Ark is used in the lesson plans for Preparing. I have owned the book for a long time (and my kids have studied it often). I would rather not repurchase the book if the CD is not an integral part of the lessons. If it is, I guess I will bite the...

Miller Pads and Paper
Tomorrow is the final day of our three day state homeschooling conference. We have enjoyed many excellent speakers like Voddie Baucham, Rick Boyer, Susan Chrismann (sp?) and LOTS of others. I was able to just browse the vendor hall because I am pretty set on what we are doing for next year. But I di...

Re: American/Modern World History Summer Reading List
Thanks Chrissy! I even have quite a few of those books and some of the ones that I don't have are ones that I've been contemplating. I think my daughter will enjoy me making a shelf of books to read through at her leisure this summer (and she'll learn a few things along the way  ). My son can ...

Re: American/Modern World History Summer Reading List
Kathleen, Thank you so much! I guess I'll just have DD "listen in" on DS's school next year when she is able and NOT try to overburden us this summer. We actually have read several of the books mentioned. I guess I just always feel like we could do "more" and I'm not sure why that is. We've actually...

Re: American/Modern World History Summer Reading List
Thanks! Maybe I won't worry about it for my son as much then since he will be doing Preparing with extensions next year for 5th grade, but my DD will be skipping to CTC next year for 7th grade (and placement chart-wise could handle RTR, but I don't want to overwhelm her OR skip the content of CTC......

American/Modern World History Summer Reading List
Ladies, I was wondering if you had any suggestions for summer reading on post-Civil War American History. I have been doing Bigger Hearts plus extensions for my 4th and 6th graders. They also have been pulling things off the shelf from that time-period for their free-reading time that are more at th...

Re: Talk to me about "new math"
I'm trying to decide what to use for pre-algebra (or algebra) for my DD for next year. So, my question for Carrie is: Does Teaching Textbooks use "new math"? I am currently looking at: 1. Continuing with Saxon for Algebra 1/2. (We have used BOTH Saxon and Singapore together all the way through, or I...

Re: Deciding between CTC and RTR
This thread has been very helpful to me. After I looked at the sample week for RTR, I thought, "My DD could do that." Reading the placement chart had always left me feeling as though RTR was a better placement for her than CTC. So, I was starting to doubt my choice of CTC with extensions for her. I ...

Re: Placement Help Please
Sounds like a super plan, Anita! :D Thank you for sharing your plan here, as I always think that is very helpful to others who may be reading this post and have a similar situation (plus, I just love to know what you decided and how it will all work together :D ). I can't wait for you to start - yo...

Re: Hands on activities
I told her about an activity I had done with my 5 yo in LHFHG, and she said, "You're such a good homeschool Mom." I told her it's not me. :D While I don't use Singapore, I use Carrie's math activities. My dh had commented to me on what a great idea this math idea was (it was with a deck of cards) a...

Re: Can you help me figure out if 6yr old is behind?
My 2 cents: Keep working on it until she gets it! But, don't worry! I have good friends who have homeschooled all five of their boys. The oldest is 22, then 20, then 18, almost 16, almost 9. The oldest graduated from college at 20 with a degree in accounting, had his CPA by 21 and now has a good-pay...

Hands on activities
Can I just say that I am NOT a "hands on homeschooler"? We read a LOT of living books. We have always done generally short lessons in a wide variety of areas. I've used very few textbooks until I started Rod and Staff English for my DD when she was at the end of third grade (she's now finishing sixt...

Re: Placement Help Please
Thank you Julie and Kathleen for those additional things to consider. As I have been looking at the placement charts some more and looking at the catalog some more, I am pretty settled on Preparing with extensions for my son. He actually would place in CTC for everything except narration. Even the d...
