One more Singapore Question

I'm sorry if this has been addressed before...I'm considering switching to Singapore. In levels 3 and 4, I see HOD doesn't sell the teacher guides. Are they not really necessary? The textbooks and workbooks are enough? Also, are answers included in the textbooks, or do we really need to get the answ...

Re: Singapore Math - Problem to switch?

Kathleen,
I appreciate your insight soooo much! Thank you! Your post says what I was thinking in my "gut" - that if we backed up to 2A, we'd catch some of the "thinking skills" we need, even if some of the "computation skills" are review.

Thanks for taking the time to share!

Singapore Math - Problem to switch?

Hi ladies, We just finished BIGGER today! Wow! And I just finished administering the Iowa Test to my 2nd grade son. I noticed that, even though he should've known how to do some of the math problems, he got "stuck" and couldn't think through how to do some of them. I think it is because they were pr...

Re: Just to encourage all of you...

That's great! When my dd (then 8 y/o) took the 2nd grade ITBS last year, she did well, too! I think 95th or 96th percentile overall. I just finished administering that same test to my son today. I will say that he is a different learner from his sister. VERY DIFFERENT. I think he'll score generally ...

Re: Noah's ark, Noah's flood? I can't find it on the site

Thanks, Patty. I may just buy the book used or something. Or just go with Draw and Write in those weeks. Appreciate your help!

Re: Noah's ark, Noah's flood? I can't find it on the site

I have a 2008 Preparing Hearts Guide. Could someone explain exactly what has changed? I thought the Dino Mystery book previously mentioned as a replacement was in Science, not the Independent History. So... is there a substitute for the Noah book or was it just dropped from the new guide? Are there ...

Re: Preparing questions

We're going to use Fridays to delve into some Apologia science, and perhaps do a "Countries and Cultures" thing, along with some cultural cooking. OR... educational game day! :-) There are many possibilities! :-)

Re: I'm laughing at myself....

Thanks, everyone! Glad I'm not alone! :-) Julie, you are so sweet! I'm surprised you remember me and knew who I was! ha! Yeah, it didn't take me long to come to my senses! It WAS hard for me to say that to you, because I do feel a sense of "loyalty" to you ladies at HOD. But at the time, I re...

I'm laughing at myself....

...because I actually thought I wanted to do "my own thing" for history next year instead of Preparing. I went through the process of going to the Cinci HS convention, analyzing curriculum, deciding to do "my own thing", etc. Then, I jumped into planning... and quickly realized that, for one, it was...

Thanks, Patty. I appreciate your input! I think it sounds like we'd be on track for R&S 4, given what you've said.

Placement in R & S Grammar

Hi, Just have a question about placement in R & S Grammar. If my dd completed FLL Level 3 last year (LOTS of diagramming, sentence types, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions covered), would she be OK to start R & S 4? We had tried R & S 3, but gave up after a month and went back to FL...

Re: HOD and Language Arts

This has been a helpful discussion. I keep waffling back and forth on grammar, specifically. Tried R&S last year, changed back to FLL. Bottom line is, I don't think my kids "love" grammar, so... maybe I should give R & S another try...

Re: Anyone do Bigger in 4 days??

I had felt it was relatively easy to make Beyond into a 4 day program, but with Bigger, it's much more challenging. So, we do it in 4 1/2 days! :D We double up on science and storytime on Monday (days 1 and 2) and no science or storytime on Tuesdays d/t a co-op in the afternoon. That's my "main" way...

Re: Taking a step back but for the best I hope.

Sounds like a wise thing to do. The guides do quickly get more challenging, and I think you may be doing the right thing in looking down the road and seeing that your child will get to some of the more advanced guides too quickly. One thing I'm learning... in theory, I'm eager to have my kids moving...
